So much fun and learning going on in Mrs. McLaughlin & Mrs. Padarath's class!

Updates from our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher (AART), Mrs. Langford:

This quarter in advanced academics, K-6 students will be focusing on the critical and creative thinking skills of Point of View and Fluency, Originality, Flexibility, and Elaboration (FOFE). Point of View encourages students to analyze how different people might look at the same idea and/or situation. FOFE encourages the production of lots of ideas, and the recombination of existing ideas. AAP resources and methods such as SCAMPER, Jacob’s Ladder and literature collages are only a few activities that will be used to teach these skills.

These strategies are embedded in lessons that extend and enrich the Program of Studies (POS) for all learners and elicit higher level thinking responses.

Visit the AAP website to see all the strategies in action, along with parent suggestions and activities you can implement at home for further emphasis. https://crsearch.fcps.edu/crsearch/retrieveresourcefile.cfm?hxresid=R0176F6

ESOL Updates for December 2019

What is your child learning in English as a Second Language groups?

Students across grade levels are learning the language of compare and contrast. They are comparing two different kinds of fruits, animals, and food items.  Afterwards, they notice the similarities and the differences between the two items. They are using the specific language to compare and contrast and to construct complete sentences when talking about the two items. In 5th and 6th grade, students will use the concept to compare and contrast various stages of the rock cycle.  In 4th grade, students have been using the language of compare and contrast to talk and write about the similarities and differences between communities and ecosystems.  In 3rd grade, students have been using the language of compare and contrast to talk about the similarities and differences between the two types of ecosystems, soccer and football, and birds and bats. Second grade is also being taught how to compare and contrast so they can start comparing two different animals of their choice.  First graders have learned to use sequence signal words, such as “first”, “then”, “next”, and “last” when retelling how characters’ feelings change in stories and when retelling story events orally.  First graders are now working on writing simple sentences about likes, wants, and needs, using “I like” and “I don’t like”, as sentence starters.

Over winter break -

Please continue to read books with your kids at home.  It does not matter in which language you read to them.  You can have them read a book to you or you can read a book together.  After reading, ask them questions about the story and the characters. This helps to build a deeper understanding of the story. Thank you for your help!

Also, please remember to go visit the local library over the winter break for their many engaging programs for kids of all ages and to check out books for snow days!!  Checking out books at the library is FREE!  Thomas Jefferson Library; 7415 Arlington Blvd, Falls Church, VA 22042; https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/branches/thomas-jefferson

Stay warm and enjoy the holidays with your kids!!
