The side playground is open for business! The kids are so excited to play on the new infinity loop!  It's great to see Mrs. Russell's class having so much fun outdoors! A special thank you to the FCPS construction crew!  Also, thanks to our PTO for adding a 2nd Buddy Bench!

Social Media Accounts

Many apps and social media accounts are above the age of our students at Bonnie Brae. Below is a message from FCPS to help parents and students monitor their usage and content.

When using social media to interact with Fairfax County public schools, offices, or staff, students are expected to exercise appropriate conduct just as they would offline. Here are some recommendations to keep in mind:

  • Please be polite. Treat people the way you would want to be treated.
  • Profanity and racial or ethnic slurs are never acceptable, nor is vulgar media (photos, gifs, videos, etc.).
  • There is no need to shout. Avoid using all capital letters and/or numerous exclamation points in your messages.
  • Do not tag @fcpsnews on tweets to friends that contain vulgar or unacceptable language.
  • If you wouldn't want your family, principal, or your entire school to see your tweet or post, then don't share it. Once it's online, you can't take it back.
  • Be truthful. For example, if you didn't witness an accident, if you're not a victim of a crime, if your bus was not an hour late, please do not tell us that these situations occurred.
  • The FCPS Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram feeds are not monitored 24/7. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please text NEEDHELP to 85511, call 1-800-273-TALK, or dial 911. If you witness something inappropriate on- or offline, tell your teacher, principal, parent, or another trusted adult immediately.
  • Be yourself. Don't represent yourself as another person when communicating with us or anyone else. Creating fake FCPS social media accounts is not acceptable either.

School administrators may be notified if a student conducts him- or herself inappropriately when communicating with the school division via social media. Administrators and/or other FCPS staff may be notified if it appears that a student may be in crisis.

For more information about student expectations and potential consequences for inappropriate conduct, please refer to FCPS' Student Rights and Responsibilities

This is a friendly reminder that the deadline for referring students in Grades 2-7 for AAP full-time Level IV consideration is due no later than January 9, 2020.

Dear Bonnie Brae,

This is a friendly reminder that the deadline for referring students in Grades 2-7 for AAP full-time Level IV consideration is due no later than January 9, 2020.  Parents are welcome to submit early, but no late referrals will be accepted.  We advise parents not to wait for pending abilities test scores if they would like their student screened. While the Grade 2 screening pool casts a starting point for screening some students, test scores are only one factor in the eligibility decision.

If you would like more information about Level IV AAP services or the screening process for Level IV, there are two parent presentations available on the AAP public website  that have the same information that was shared at our local school information meetings.  https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs)

Referrals can be submitted to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher Mrs. Kaitlin Burg (kmburg@fcps.edu) at any time up through January 9

A message from the Fairfax County Government Center about Influenza

Dear Parent or Guardian,

This is the time of year when we expect to see an increase in the number of respiratory illnesses in our community, including coughs, colds, sore throats, and flu.  While these illnesses are not unusual for this time of year, there are several things that you can do to protect your child and others.

To help control the spread of respiratory illnesses:

  • Have your child vaccinated against influenza (“the flu”):  Vaccination is the single best way to protect against the flu.  CDC recommends all persons aged 6 months and older receive the flu vaccine each year.  Flu vaccine is readily available at doctors’ offices and pharmacies.  We encourage you to get it as soon as it is available in the fall or early winter.
  • Teach your child how to stop the spread of illness:
  • Use tissues and dispose of them properly.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, or cough into your upper sleeve.
  • Do not cough or sneeze into your hands.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth to prevent the spread of germs.
  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water for 20 seconds.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers, when soap and water are not available (with supervision for younger children).
  • Do not share drinking glasses or eating utensils.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces at home that people often touch:  Use regular household cleaning products or mix ¼ cup chlorine bleach with 1 gallon of cool water to wipe down often touched areas. Always follow label instructions for any disinfectant.
  • Look for signs of illness in your child:  Symptoms of flu include fever, headache, tiredness, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle aches.  Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may also occur. Symptoms of throat infections commonly include fever and sore throat without the stuffy nose and cough.  The common cold usually does not present with fever.
  • Contact your doctor or healthcare provider if your child shows symptoms of a respiratory illness:
  • Fever (100.4°F or greater) AND chills, cough, sore throat, headache, or muscle aches.

To stop from spreading illness to others, keep children home when they are ill. If your child has flu symptoms he or she should remain home and away from others until the fever has been gone for 24 hours (without fever reducing medication such as Tylenol®) and symptoms are better. If your doctor or healthcare provider prescribes treatment for your child, follow all directions for taking the medicine.  If your child has been diagnosed with bacterial pharyngitis (“strep throat”), he or she should remain home for at least 24 hours after starting antibiotics so as not to spread disease to others.

A fact sheet on influenza is attached for more information.  If you have any questions, please contact your school public health nurse or the Acute Communicable and Emerging Diseases Program at hdcd@fairfaxcounty.gov or 703-246-2433, TTY 711.
