Principal Coffee

On Monday we hosted a Principal Coffee for parents.  At this meeting we shared our school improvement goals and instructional practices.  Parents learned about the components of Morning Meeting and participated in one with Oak Hill staff members.  They were able to observe teachers' facilitating Morning Meetings and how it builds community in the classroom.  Parents also learned about ways they could support their child's learning at home.  We will be hosting additional Principal Coffees after the Winter Break and hope you can join us.

Pre-Arranged Absences

With winter break around the corner, we wanted to remind you of our attendance procedures for students who will be traveling.  Please fill out the pre-arranged absence form and return it to the office no later than December 16th. Please note that FCPS has new regulations that pertain to travel outside of the country for a period of four consecutive weeks or more. The pre-arranged absence form and regulations can be found here.  Please contact the office at 703-467-3500 if you need more information.

Winter Break and Office Schedule

Calendar Reminder

As a reminder, this year winter break starts on December 23 and ends on January 3, 2020. Classes will resume on Monday, January 6, 2020.  Oak Hill's Office will close at 4:30pm on Friday, December 20 and will reopen at 8am on Monday, January 6, 2020. See the complete 2019-20 school year calendar

Tip of the Week

tip

Does your child love to play board games or use dice?  Playing board games and using dice can help to increase students’ understanding of number lines and number concepts.  With winter break coming up, this is a great opportunity to take some time as a family to play board games together and increase your child’s math skills.  Some of our favorites are Qwirkle (ages 5+), 24 (ages 9+), Set (ages 6+), Dara (ages 8+), and Ticket to Ride (ages 8+).  To read more about this idea, check out this blogpost here.

Deadline for AAP Level IV Referrals

This is a friendly reminder that the deadline for referring students in Grades 2-7 for AAP full-time Level IV consideration is due no later than January 9, 2020.  Parents are welcome to submit early, but no late referrals will be accepted.  We advise parents not to wait for pending abilities test scores if they would like their student screened. While the Grade 2 screening pool casts a starting point for screening some students, test scores are only one factor in the eligibility decision.

If you would like more information about Level IV AAP services or the screening process for Level IV, there are two parent presentations available on the AAP public website  that have the same information that was shared at our local school information meetings. https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs)

Referrals can be submitted to the Oak Hill ES Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Jane Wheeler, at any time up through January 9. If you have questions, please contact Jane Wheeler, AART, at jgwheeler@fcps.edu

Lost and Found

We have an abundance of jackets in our Lost and Found.  Please encourage your child to check if they are missing an item.  All items that are not claimed by December 20th will be donated.  As a reminder, we do look for names in jackets before we donate.  We encourage you to label your child's clothing.
