Justice Newsletter - December 1, 2019

"You've made this day a special day, by just your being you. There's no person in the whole world like you. And I like you just the way you are." ~ Mr. Rogers

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

I hope that your weekend was spent celebrating with lots of family and friends. Our faculty and staff look forward to welcoming our students tomorrow morning.

As some of you many know, Justice has been approved for an addition to our existing building. We are in the beginning stages of design and construction. Please join the FCPS architects to view the proposed design plans for the addition on Monday, December 9th @ 6:30 PM in the library. After the meeting, please join our PTSA for a presentation on the dangers of Juuling/Vaping.

FCPS will be participating in a town hall meeting to discuss the division’s new equity initiatives at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3, at Temple Rodef Shalom in Falls Church. Superintendent Scott Brabrand and Chief Equity Officer Francisco Duran are scheduled to appear. The event is open to all FCPS parents and guardians, staff members, and high school students.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or school staff. We are happy to help.

Air Force Visit

The Air Force recruiter will be holding a pizza lunch information session in the Career Center on 12/3/19 for Juniors and Seniors interested in the Air Force. Students will need to get a pass in advance from the Career Center.

Rising 9th Grade Orientation & HS Curriculum Night

The Justice HS Rising 9th Grade Parent Orientation & Curriculum Night will be held on Thursday, January 9th. Pre-orientation sessions for special populations will be held at 6:00 pm for parents interested in hearing more about the following topics: ESOL, IB/MYP, and Special Education. The full orientation will kick off at 6:30 pm and is geared towards providing information for Rising 9th grade students and parents. At 7:15, students and parents of all high school grade levels will have the opportunity to talk with teachers, department chairs, school counselors and administrators about course offerings, course requirements, and scheduling choices. In the event of inclement weather, the program will be held on Monday, January 13th.

Winter Non-Writing SOL Testing

The Winter SOL retakes will start the week of Dec. 9 through Jan. 9, 2020.  Students have the opportunity to opt-in to take any SOLs they need for a verified credit in science, English, history or math.  If your child chooses to take advantage of this opportunity – they should contact their counselor to be placed on the opt-in list by December 6.   Seniors who need one or more verified credits to graduate do not need to opt in as they will be automatically signed up to take any SOLs needed for graduation.  Remediation will be provided for seniors needing a verified credit(s) to graduate in 2020.  If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact your child’s school counselor.

Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)

Students in grades 10-12 have the opportunity to take the ASVAB Career Exploration test for FREE at school on Thursday, December 13, 2019, at 8:30 am in the Career Center. Sign up by December 6th in the College & Career Center or on Naviance under College Visits-ASVAB. The ASVAB is the most widely used multiple-aptitude test battery in the world and is administered by a military representative. The test is available to all students, regardless of whether or not they have an interest in a military career. It assesses a student's ability to learn new skills and is a predictor of success in training and education programs. It includes an interest inventory and other activities and resources designed to help students explore the world of work and gain confidence in making career decisions. For further information please go to http://www.asvabprogram.com. The library site has a study guide resource to assist with planning for the ASVAB. Please go to: ASVAB Prep. Results will be sent to JHS and will be distributed at a results/interpretive session. text.

Senior Transcripts/Letters of Recommendation

Students must turn in their transcript requests to the Student Services office 30 days in advance of the college deadline. Seniors need to be mindful of the impact of the upcoming winter break when counselors and teachers will not available from 12/23/19 - 01/05/20. Students with a January deadline must submit their requests by December 1st. Students who do not submit a transcript request prior to break will have their requests processed after break. As long as the student has submitted the application on time, most colleges will offer some leniency in the deadline for the documents that the school must provide. College application sites can sometimes become overloaded on submission deadline dates so students are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible to avoid any glitches that may prevent the application from being received by the official deadline. These reminders are sent in an effort to avoid unnecessary stress. Please contact your child’s counselor if you have any questions.
