The Mustang Weekly - November 18th, 2019

THE MUSTANG WEEKLY

NOVEMBER 18TH, 2019

A note from Principal Kownacki:

Dear Mustang Community:

This past weekend, the theatre department staged, “The Man Who Came to Dinner”. It was awesome! I continue to marvel at the talented group of students at SCMS. Congrats to the cast, crew and faculty advisors that contributed to the show. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for the spring musical!

Also, this past week, applications for the Principal’s Advisory Council (PAC) were made available to students. The PAC will allow students to share their voice and opinions on issues at SCMS that are important to them. The group will meet with me once per month for the remainder of the year and help to form policies and initiatives that are reflective of the student perspective. Please encourage your student to pick up an application and submit it to the main office by Friday, November 22.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions. I look forward to seeing you at SCMS soon.

Sincerely,

Peter Kownacki

WEATHER EVENTS-MAKE A PLAN:

Now that the cold weather is here, we encourage you to have a plan for delays and closings and discuss those plans with your child. FCPS takes several factors into account before announcing school cancellations/closings/delays. Student safety is the most important factor in their decision-making.

  • SCMS doors open at 7:12 a.m. On very cold days we try to allow students into the main lobby earlier than 7:12 a.m. but this is dependent on staff arriving early to supervise. We cannot guarantee early access to students.
  • A 2-hour delay affects students and teachers alike. Class start times and bus arrival times are pushed back by two hours. If you have a meeting scheduled on a day with a delay that meeting will very likely need to be rescheduled. Please call the school to confirm your appointment on those days.
  • A 2-hour early release due to weather events is used infrequently because of the concerns about students being able to get home safely. Does your child know what to do if he/she is released from school at 12:15 p.m.?
  • For information about FCPS policies and where to get weather-related information click here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/safety-and-transportation/weather-cancellation-procedures

LIFETOUCH PICTURE DAYS / YEARBOOK PHOTOS:

If your student missed both of original picture days and the retake day on November 11th, there is one more opportunity to take a picture for our yearbook with Lifetouch. Lifetouch has a location in Annandale, Virginia and will have a makeup date on Saturday, November 23rd. Please call Lifetouch’s office at 410-644-7700 to schedule an appointment. Our picture day ID is MJ819602Q1.

STUDENT-PARENT SURVEY FOR FEDERAL IMPACT AID:

THANK YOU to al the families who have turned in their Federal Impact Aid Forms. We are still in need of some forms. FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County Public Schools and centers.   On October 24th these forms were handed out to students in their 3rd period Learning Seminar classes. For each school aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date and return the survey to SCMS. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated and returned by October 30th. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.  Video link – https://youtu.be/uPqC3BLf3Ow
