Fall Sports Highlights

It’s another great day to be a Cavalier! Woodson Volleyball took West Potomac 3-0 to become Regional Champions for the first time in school history! The ladies played their game and even came from 6 points down in the second set for the win. Thank you to everyone who came out and filled the gym to help push to the win. Player of the Match, Jordan Lyons racked up kills while Jaden Reasor made our defense unstoppable with fourteen digs for the night. Our setters were spot on with Nicole Gibson and Erin McPhilomy with sixteen and fourteen assists respectively.

Our ladies then went on to win their first State game in the Quarter Finals Saturday night against South Lakes 3-0!!!! Cavs took the first set 25-21 after a neck and neck fight. The Seahawks brought even more heat in the second set but our ladies pushed to finally get the win at 27-25. Momentum was big going into the third set but the girls had to bring their game and they took off to win 25-15. Hitter Amy Burkhardt, Player of the Match, played superbly to help the team to the win. Middle Maja Zuber put up big defense to block against South Lakes strong front line and used her signature slide hit to put points on the board. Olivia Guerra brought a powerful defense to the game as she threw herself all over the court to catch hits and tips and put them up for the set. Our ladies now move on to the Semifinals!

STATE SEMIFINAL GAME TODAY, NOVEMBER 19 at Washington Liberty HS (formerly Washington and Lee) 1301 N Stafford St,  Arlington, VA 22201. The game is at 7:00 p.m. and is $10 entry. Cav Family, history is being made here! It’s a Tuesday night. Bring your LOUD to help our Lady Cavs win this Semifinal Game and head to State Finals for the first time in history!!!! Thank you for the great support so many have given with showing up and cheering this amazing team on!! Please don your red, white and blue and come out to support these girls and make them feel at home on an away court.

Woodson Varsity Field Hockey hosted Yorktown in the State quarter-finals.  Seniors Margaret Stephan and Izzy Gonzales got the ball in front of goal for Katie Williams to put on target and Zoe Hite hit the net.  In the second half, Allie Maahs finished off the match with Woodson’s second goal.  Final, 2-0.  Cavs win.

In State semi-finals, Woodson took the field against Kellam.  The Lady Cavs went on the front foot from the first whistle.  Audrey Fisher, Maahs, and Senior Anna Stribling bossed the midfield.  Senior Sidney Allen made a great save.  Everything was going according to plan, but then Kellam scored two.  Woodson played tough, maintained composure, and reached halftime.  Within 30 seconds of the second half start, off a pass from Gwyneth Durosko, Stephan scored.  The Lady Cavs clawed their way back into the game, but it was not to be their game.

The 2019 WGVFH team provided many memorable moments including exciting goals, saves, tackles, overtimes, shoot-outs, coach-of-the-year recognition, and of course the silverware from Regions.  A final knock of the sticks to Senior Lady Cavs Sidney Allen, Anabel Heisley, Bridget Cassata, Anna Stribling, Margaret Stephan, Rachel Hartzler, and Izzy Gonzales.  Congratulations on a fantastic season!

Woodson Ice Hockey Club had a great game--the second of the season--with a score of 7 to 0. Our next game is this Friday, November 22, an early game at the Mt. Vernon Ice Arena. Entrance is free. Puck drop is 5:15pm. Hope to see you there.  Also, don’t forget to congratulate our elected Captains Carson Hoffman, Dan Morgan, and Thomas Santaniello!
