Message from the Principal

Dear Wolftrap Families,

LEXIA: Thanks to the support of our Wolftrap PTA, your child will be using Lexia Core5 Reading during the Language Arts block in grades K-5. The activities in Core5 support and build on your child’s classroom curriculum and focus on developing reading skills in six areas: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. During September and October, your child began Core5 at a starting point that fit his or her needs based on a pre-assessment. Online activities include direct instruction and immediate feedback as your child learns new skills. It is important that your child works without any help while using Core5 at home. All of the work your child does at home is recorded and reported to school. This way, teachers can see when help is needed and provide additional instruction at school. If you have a question about your child’s username or password, please contact your child’s teacher.

ECO-SCHOOLS: The 36 students participating in our inaugural program have been very busy developing an understanding of the Eco-Schools program, as developed by the National Wildlife Federation. Over the course of the past two months, they have completed audits of our current transportation, energy, and consumption & waste usage. They have started to learn how these areas impact our school community and the need to develop action plans in order to reach our desired goals. In December, these action plans will be developed in detail with the implementation of student strategies in the New Year. I look forward to updating you on these specific strategies so that you may continue the conversations at home.

OPEN HOUSE AND BOOK FAIR: We look forward to seeing you at our annual Open House and Book Fair! Please see this link for the detailed schedule.

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE: As a reminder, we will be filling grocery bags with one of each item and our goal is to fill 120 bags! Donations can be brought into school through November 22nd and placed in a box at each classroom.

  • Kindergarten - packets of gravy mix and cans of chicken or vegetable broth
  • First Grade - boxed Bisquick
  • Second Grade - boxed mac and cheese
  • Third Grade - instant mashed potatoes
  • Fourth Grade – boxed stuffing
  • Fifth Grade - canned green beans
  • Sixth Grade - large plastic containers of applesauce

Thank you in advance for your contributions! I wish you all a happy and restful Thanksgiving holiday.

Sincerely,

Teresa Khuluki
Principal

Message from the PTA

Hello Wolftrap families,

Moving right along into a busy November! Thanks for those who attended the evening PTA meeting and last week’s Dining for Dollars at Crust. We had a great turnout of military families for the Veteran’s Day Assembly, attended by all grades this year. Many thanks to the 6th graders and Mrs. Khuluki for the program and to Andrea Dahl, Tara Holtaway, Keith Robinson, Jo Neuber and the scouting troops who helped make it a successful event.

Book Fair starts this week and we can’t wait! Hundreds of wonderful titles are available, a perfect time to add new books into your home library or for holiday gifts. Details, including Open House schedules, below.

Other events of note: Original Works deadline has been extended to Wed. November 20, you can order here. Coming up in early December: the Talent Show Preview on Dec. 9 and Family Science Night on Dec. 10 is still in real need of volunteers, age 18 years and older. We are lucky that the Children’s Science Center has offered this event two years in a row, but we can’t hold it if we don’t have the minimum number of volunteers! Please sign up if you or someone you know (high school, college or grandparents too!) are willing to take a spot so we can host this fun night.

Did you know that there’s a Special Education PTA for Fairfax County? What about a Parent Resource Library and classes like Raising Screen Smart Kids and Specialized Math in Action? Well, there is!  Check out our new page with information on both, including upcoming classes and parent groups. Thanks to July Garrett on the Webteam for putting this great resource together.

The PTA Parent Survey is now open through Dec. 13. Please take a brief moment between turkey and football to share your thoughts. Hope everyone has a relaxing week and Thanksgiving break!

Jessica Jue, President  (president@wolftrappta.org)

Family Science Night

The Children’s Science Center is bringing their Family Science Night Program back to Wolftrap Elementary, Tuesday December 10, 2019 in the Gym from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Family Science Night offers a variety of engaging, many hands-on science activities. Check out the PTA website for last years fun activities.

Young children are natural scientists, rationally making observations, testing hypotheses, analyzing data and reaching conclusions. Unfortunately, many of students lose interest in science as they grow up. Join us to help keep our students engaged and excited about STEM subjects.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO ENSURE THE EVENT CAN HAPPEN! If you enjoy science, this the event for you. The Children Science Museum requires a minimum of eighteen adult volunteers from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. to set up, assist students with activities, and clean up. Sign up to be a dedicated event volunteer by Tuesday November 22 using our signup genius. Thanks for your support!
