Paw Print week of December 9-13, 2019

Sue and Holly

Dear Panther Families,

December is moving along. We enjoyed the strings concert last night and are looking forward to the 5th grade Chorus Concert next week and the band concert the following week. It is always great to have opportunities to witness our students' musical talents.

We are so appreciative of all of the donations to the Giving Tree and the Toy Drive. There is still time to send in a new unwrapped toy for the Toy Drive. The police officers will be at Poplar Tree on Monday to pick up the donations.

Leslie Leisey, School Based Technology Specialist, will be speaking at the Principals Coffee on Friday, December 13. Please join us in the LA Room on Friday morning 8:45-9:30am for some coffee and great information.

Winter weather has many months to possibly impact the school day. Please see the FCPS Weather Cancellation Procedures for details on how the decisions about delaying or closing schools are made and communicated to everyone.

We hope to see many of you next Wednesday evening for the 5th grade choral concert and on Friday morning for the coffee.

Have a great weekend!

Ms. Andujar and Ms. Walker

Supporting our community

Fairfax Police Department Toy Drive

Poplar Tree has been chosen as one of the schools this year to host the Toy Drive for the Fairfax County Police Department Santa's Ride collection. Donate NEW unwrapped toys, games, books, and gifts to be distributed to children at Fairfax Hospital, Georgetown Lombardi Cancer Center, and to the children in the community who might not otherwise have a cheerful holiday season!

The FCPD Motor Squad officers will pick up on December 9 and will visit Poplar Tree students on December 10 to share their gratitude for supporting the toy drive. For more information about the FCPD Motor Squad and Santa's Ride at their webpage

Important date

Advanced Academics Important Deadline

Level IV Referral Packets for FCPS students grades 2-7 are due to the local school by January 9, 2020 at 4:00 PM.

Please note that there are NO exceptions to the deadline. Parents are welcome to submit early, but no late referrals will be accepted.

We advise parents not to wait for pending abilities test scores if they would like their student screened. While the Grade 2 screening pool casts a starting point for screening some students, test scores are only one factor in the eligibility decision.

Additional information can be found on the Advanced Academic Programs website under Full-Time Level IV Services and Screening Procedures.

Ms. Keleher will also have office hours available for parents on December 12 (8:45-11:45am and 3:15-4:45pm) to answer questions. Sign up here for those available times.

If you have any questions, please contact Kim Keleher, AART, at KJKeleher@fcps.edu.

PTA International

International Heritage Night 2020

Please join us for International Heritage Night on Friday, January 10, 2020, starting at 6pm in the Poplar Tree cafeteria. It will be a fun night of international food, drinks, performances, and activities while we share and learn about each other's cultures and heritages! If you are interested in signing up for a display table, a list of display ideas is available here. We also need volunteers to help with the event. Here is the sign up link for both tables and volunteering; you may also visit the PTA website. Please email Cory Thacker for questions or more information.

Inclement Weather

Inclement Weather Information

When FCPS cancels or delays the opening of school due to inclement weather or other emergencies, staff, students, and parents are notified in multiple ways as soon as the decision is made.

FCPS' official Twitter account, @fcpsnews (with the blue check mark), is where you'll first see closing or delay announcements. That's because we've found Twitter to be the fastest, most effective method of disseminating news. Additional communication channels used to announce a delayed opening or closure include FCPS’ public website, email, text, Facebook, local television and radio stations, and Channel 21. Subscribers to the Delayed Openings and School Closings email on News You Choose will also be notified.

Please keep in mind that there may be a delay from the time messages are transmitted to them being received by users. More than 588,000 emails and texts are being transmitted during every weather closure or delay. However, FCPS has no control over how long it takes cell and internet service providers to distribute emails and texts to customers.

Please view FCPS' Weather Cancellation Procedures page for more information on weather closings and delays.
