Second graders were treated to a visit from a very special veteran - Ms. Thatcher's grandfather.

Churchill Road students were fortunate to have many active military and retired veterans visit on Veteran's Day. The students learned about military life in all branches of the service. They enjoyed this special opportunity to ask questions about what it is like to serve in the armed services and even try on and handle some of the equipment.

Wellness: Benefits of Reading

book fair

CRS students and parents had a great night browsing for books at the book fair.

The incredible benefits of reading to young children are well established. There are also tremendous benefits of reading with school-age children, even after they are independent readers. Students’ listening levels are far more advanced than their reading levels until eighth grade. Students can enjoy listening to a more complicated plot than they are capable of reading. By reading together at home you can introduce your child to engaging and interesting stories where characters grapple with difficult issues. While reading together you will not only be building your child’s vocabulary by allowing your child to hear the rich and sophisticated language in books, you will also be helping your child to develop an awareness of people with different experiences and backgrounds, while confident and secure in your presence. Reading together encourages a life-long love of reading and an enduring bond.  Consider selecting a book with your student for you to read together at home at the CRS Book Fair continuing through November 15th.  You can select a topic that interests you both or explore something new together. Happy reading!

Cheer Winners of the Week

Congratulations to our Churchill Cheer winners for the week of November 4.  Cheers are given to students who follow the four R’s. This week’s winners are: Ava Blackburn (K); Asher Sheikh (Grade 1); Edwin Pan (Grade 2) and Allegra Nogales (Grade 3).  Our winner for PE is: Luke Zemek (K-2).  Remember, at CRS we follow the four R’s. We respect ourselves, we respect others, we respect property, we respect the Earth, and we are responsible.

As outlined by FCPS Regulation 1367.2, school principals shall offer options to nonprofit organizations that want to make their materials available to students and parents. At Churchill Road, non-profit organizations will be permitted to send home flyers in the take home folder 4 times during the year. The dates for the 2019-2020 school year are the weeks of September 16, December 2, March 2 and May 4. These fliers must be related to the school’s educational mission and be age-appropriate. Community organizations must submit their materials in advance to the school’s principal and must include the disclaimer “These materials are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent, or this School.” Once approved, the organization will be required to make the copies necessary for distribution. Any questions can be directed to Kim Moran, Churchill Road's Public Relations Liaison.
