Establishing Healthy Sleep Habits

sleep

Sleep is an essential component to children leading healthy and productive lives. It has a significant impact on the ability of students to reach success in school. Lack of sleep may contribute to negative consequences including poor academic performance, behavior problems, emotional difficulties, and health issues. Unfortunately, fewer than half of all children meet the recommended requirements for sleep; 10 to 13 hours for preschool children, 9 to 12 hours for children ages 6 through 12, and 8 to 10 hours for adolescents ages 13 through 18. Cameron’s 2019-2020 Turkey Trot

Please join us on November 25th at 10 am for Cameron’s annual Turkey Trot race.  Four students from each class, grades K-6, will be running their hearts out in hopes to win a turkey to bring home for Thanksgiving.  The Head Starters will be kicking off the event.  This is a year you won’t want to miss!

Be on the lookout for a letter that will be sent home to the children running in the race with a reminder to dress appropriately for the weather and to wear sneakers.  Thank you for your continued support.

Cold Weather Outdoor Recess

Parent often ask, “Do the children go outside when it is cold?”

The simple answer is, “Yes…most of the time.”

At Cameron we try to allow outdoor recess whenever possible.  Students need fresh air and physical activity and it helps them focus better during learning times.

During the winter months students should come to school with coats, hats and mittens every day when the weather is cold in order to be prepared for outdoor recess.

However, there are some days we will cancel outdoor recess.  Classes must have indoor recess if it is raining or if there is a wind chill warning.  Outdoor activity must be limited to 15 minutes or less if there is a wind chill advisory.

If the class is going out for recess, all students are expected to go outside.  In the rare case that your doctor has recommended that your child needs to stay indoors for several days due to an illness, please send in the doctor’s note to the office.

If your family needs assistance with warm outerwear, please contact Ms. Bryant or Ms. McNealy.

School Closing for Weather

FCPS suggests families begin to make preparations now in case of school closings due to weather throughout the winter months.  Closures are broadcast on Twitter, TV, Radio, and by emergency message.  Please see the FCPS video to find out how the decision is made to close school.

Substitute Teachers Needed

Do you like working with kids?  Are you free one or more days during the week? Are you looking for a job where you can work mornings or afternoons while the kids are in school?  Consider being a substitute teacher or instructional assistant.

Almost every day we have substitutes at Cameron helping teach kids when teachers are home sick or attending professional development.  Finding great, reliable substitutes is hard, so if you, a friend or family member is interested we would love to talk to you about this opportunity.  If you are a substitute you can choose to work just here at Cameron or at many schools. Fairfax county has information about requirements and how to apply on their website as well. https://www.fcps.edu/Substitute-Teaching-New-Applicants

Substitute teachers follow lesson plans left by the teacher for classroom or specialist teachers.

The educational requirement is at least 60 college credits.

Substitute IA’s assist the classroom teacher or work with small groups of students.

The educational requirement is at least a high school diploma.
