CWES Weekly Happenings.

Dear Families,

Did you know 17% of CWES students come from military families? What a wonderful time we had on Monday honoring our Veterans with our annual Thanksgiving luncheon! Thanks to those of you who presented your experiences to our students, and to those of you who came to share in the celebration! It was also wonderful to see so many of you at the PTA meeting last night, and to share my new series of Parent Coffees! This will be an informal way to engage around a variety of topics of interest. The first coffee will be held December 4 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM in the library and will be about special education. I hope to see you there! As we lead up to the Thanksgiving holiday, our theme for morning meetings these two weeks is that cWEs CAN be thankful. Please consider encouraging your child to participate in our fundraiser, The Turkey Trot, on November 22. Information went home in Take Home Tuesday folders yesterday and in a special News You Choose bulletin on Monday. This SCA-sponsored event encourages students to walk or run laps to raise funds for refillable water bottle stations, the use of which our Environmental Club will promote throughout the year! A healthy habit to encourage more healthy habits! Have a wonderful week.

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig, “Dr. L”

Join Us for Our  December Workshops

Zones of Regulation

Rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy, the Zones of Regulation is a framework that uses four colors to help students identify their feelings and level of alertness and provides strategies to support emotional regulation. By understanding how to notice their body’s signals, detect triggers, read social context, and consider how their behaviors impact those around them, students learn improved emotional control, sensory regulation, self-awareness, and problem-solving skills.

Participants will:

  • Learn about the four Zones, corresponding feelings and visuals to reinforce this language at home.
  • Explore calming and alerting strategies to teach children how to become aware of and manage their emotions.
  • Discuss individual needs in a collaborate group setting.

Presented by Emily Habermeyer and Paula Augenstein, FCPS School Counselors.

Thursday, December 5, 2019, 10 a.m.-noon.

Raising Children with High Self-Esteem in a High Pressure Culture

We all want our children to feel good about themselves and meet their full potential. But how can we raise children with healthy self-esteem when they compare themselves to others and believe they aren't doing or being enough… no matter how successful they are?

Participants will learn:

  • Where self-esteem comes from
  • Practical strategies to help children improve their self-esteem
  • Why some strategies we usually use to improve self-esteem may backfire
  • 3 simple actions used to improve your child’s self-esteem today and, in the future

Presented by Parenting Specialist, Rachel Bailey, M.A., CPDPE.

Friday, December 6, 2019, 10 a.m.-noon.
