From the Principal's Desk

Dear Families,

What a pleasure it has been to connect with so many families over the past conference days. We appreciate your partnership in your child’s education. I look forward to seeing you at our PTA general membership meeting November 12 at 6:30, where I will share information about the school improvement plan, provide an overview of a social-emotional program we are exploring, and more! Happy November!

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig, (Dr. L)

 Attendance Matter

As we conclude the first quarter of the school year, we are taking the opportunity to remind you of the importance of daily school attendance. Academic success relies upon excellent school attendance.  Students who come to school on time every day are building critical life skills they will use the rest of their lives.  Like strengthening a muscle, building positive attendance habits early on makes a difference for our students today and for our adults of tomorrow.  Attending school regularly helps students feel better about school and themselves.

 Did you know?

  • Even excused absences interfere with learning.
  • A pattern of absences (whether unexcused or excused) is one of the main reasons for lower academic achievement.
  • Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time.

Absences can mask deeper struggles, for example:  absences may be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with schoolwork, dealing with peer conflicts or facing a medical or mental health concern.

Support is available:

CWES staff is committed to supporting your child’s attendance in school.  Contact a member of our team if you need help problem solving attendance-related concerns:

Becca Wilson, school counselor (gr. 1, 3, 5)

Necole Brown, school counselor (gr. K, 2, 4, 6)

Nilofar Naderi, school social worker

JaQuese Hawkins, school social worker

Marisa Straub, school psychologist

Additional resources can be found online at http://www.fcps.edu/attendance.

You can find your child’s first quarter attendance information (absences and tardies) on the progress reports that are going home next week. In addition, the FCPS attendance policy requires schools to contact parents when there are five or more unexcused absences

Please remember to call the attendance line at 703-764-5656 to report all absences.  If the school is not notified of the reason for the absence within 48 hours, it will automatically be recorded as an unexcused absence.  If you know in advance that your student will miss one or more days of school, please contact the school or use this form for a prearranged absence: https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/se291.pdf

We appreciate your partnership in this effort.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Lunch Celebration

Happy November! We are just under two weeks away from our annual Veterans Day event and Thanksgiving luncheon! All parents are invited to celebrate the holiday season with your children.

On this special day, all grade levels will attend a presentation to learn from active duty and/or retired military men and women in our community. This is a time-honored tradition here at Canterbury Woods and we are so excited to have presenters take their time to share their experiences and expertise with our students and staff. If you have any questions regarding the event, please email Deirdre Ladd, Assistant Principal at email

Lunch Schedule

To accommodate all of our guests, there will be an alternate lunch schedule for that day. Please see below for your child’s scheduled lunch time.

Heroes in the Hallway

If someone in your family has served or is currently serving in the military, we want to celebrate them this Veterans Day! Remember to fill out this form and attach a picture of the person. We will display them in the hall during the week of Veterans Day (November 11-15th).  Please return to the main office by Thursday, November 7.

School Directory

For your convenience, we have created an email directory so you can contact other parents in the school. To prevent paper waste, we are making copies on demand in the office, and have partnered with the PTA to post it securely on the password-protected PTA website online. Note that your information was not included if you requested to opt out of the directory. If you’d like a paper copy of a directory, next time you are in the office, ask for a copy of individual classes, grades, or request the whole school list.
