Family Life Education Parent Preview
You are invited to preview the Family Life Education media and lessons and to talk with school staff about the program. The meeting will be held on Thursday, November 7 at 6:30 pm in the cafeteria. All program materials and media for all grade levels will be available for your review at this time.
Students in grades K-6 participate in Family Life Education (FLE) instruction through their classroom teacher. Students in Kindergarten through grade three receive instruction in an emotional and social health unit. Students in grades 4-6 receive instruction in a human growth and development unit and an emotional and social health unit. For more information about the FCPS Family Life Education program, please see the detailed grade-level program descriptions at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle.
Families who do not wish to have their child participate in FLE instruction may choose to opt their child out of any or all the lessons. If you would like to opt your child out of one or more lessons, please fill out the form provided to you in your child’s orientation packet at the beginning of the school year or you may access the opt out forms online at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education. If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of FLE lessons by using the form provided earlier in the school year, you do not need to complete another form. Should you opt your child out and then later decide you want your child included in FLE instruction, you must notify your child’s teacher in writing before instruction begins.
Fall Make-Up Picture Day
Anyone who missed Picture Day in October can have his/her picture taken on November 15. Please stop by the office for an order form or email the office at HayfieldESOffice@fcps.edu so that a form can be sent home with your child.
If you want a retake, please have your child return the original portrait package on picture make-up day.
You can still order with your Picture Day ID at mylifetouch.com. Picture Day ID: HJ249067Q0.
Advanced Academic Program
Level IV Announcement
Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8 (Level IV)
Level IV services are available for students found eligible through a central selection process. The program is available in Grades 3-8. Eligible students use curriculum from the AAP Curriculum Framework for Levels II-IV in the four academic subject areas on a full-time basis.
Due to the volume of files screened centrally for Level IV services, deadlines are strictly held. The referral deadline is January 9, 2020.
A Level IV file workshop will be held on Thursday, November 21, 6-7 p.m., in the Hayfield Elementary School library. This workshop is for parents interested in submitting a Level IV referral.
The AAP Level IV Referral Form, and Parent/Guardian Questionnaire is available on the FCPS website at https://www.fcps.edu/node/38893.
Additional information about the holistic screening process and information used for screening can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/current-fcps-students.
Please email Maggie Gawen, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, magawen@fcps.edu, with any questions.
Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair comes to our school from November 11-15, to share the newest books and other exciting learning products with our young readers. Parents and teachers will find plenty of items of interest to them as well. The fair is open Monday from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. during the Veterans' Day Lunch for parents to shop. Tuesday is the student Wish List Day. We are open Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. for student shopping. We are open on Friday from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. for student shopping. We’re also hosting a Family Event on Thursday, November 14 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend this event.
Students will preview the Book Fair on Tuesday and come home with a wish list for a few things they would like to get. Parents are invited to come anytime during the week during open hours to browse and/or make purchases. Parents may pull their child out of lunch to purchase books with them. If parents are unable to attend but would still like their student to purchase something, they may send in checks (made payable to Hayfield ES PTA) or cash with their students. Parents may also open an eWallet account for their children through Scholastic. This is HIGHLY encouraged as there is no need to worry about exact amounts on checks or the losing of cash. For information on eWallet and to sign-up please click here: https://www.smore.com/2g1w9. You will only be charged in the end for what is actually purchased. Since Hayfield is a public school no tax is charged. It is also very helpful to have a list of what the student is allowed to buy, especially in the primary grades.
When you visit the Scholastic Book Fair, please consider donating a book as a special gift to your child’s classroom library. These books will enrich the education of children for years to come. We have asked teachers to preview the Book Fair and fill out a Classroom Wish List so you will know exactly which books they desire. Look for the Wish List Display and volunteers will help you from there.

Please be sure to check the table located outside of the front office for any items your child may be missing. We have many jackets and coats. Any items not picked up by November 26 will be donated.

We also have some brown or black boot laces which are $6.00 a pair. Let your child pick their favorite or make arrangements to pick up a pair without them knowing by contacting Ruth Drickey at 703-924-4532 or by email at RIDrickey@fcps.edu.
