Message from the Principal

Dear Sangster Families,

November is a busy month with much to celebrate!  Sangster Elementary will be hosting a Veterans Day celebration on Monday, November 11, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. where all 1005 students will be participating in honoring Veterans and Active Military Personnel.  The celebration includes active military personnel from each of the five branches of the armed services as well as choral, band and handbell performances of patriotic music by students.   Weather permitting, the celebration is held in the bus loop and anyone can attend.  We are inviting military personnel to visit classrooms throughout the day.  If you are interested in visiting a classroom, please contact your child’s teacher or the main office.

Thanksgiving is also just around the corner.  I love this holiday when family and friends get together just for the sake of being together.  It does not require the purchase of gifts, just giving thanks.  It is also a wonderful time of year to create family and generational connections that are so important to our children.  During this Thanksgiving season, I hope that you and your family will be able to spend quality time together.   I wish for all of you a Thanksgiving where you can focus on your blessings and take joy in your family.  Thanks for all you do to make our community a wonderful place.  I am thankful for you!

Your Partner in Education,

Lisa M. Reddel

Principal

Federal Impact Aid Forms Still Needed

Please remember that all impact aid forms should have been returned and must be signed and dated.  We need 100% participation, even if you are not military affiliated.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's homeroom teacher. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Please return a form for each student if you have not already done so

Sangster Book Character Day

We are celebrating our love of reading and the upcoming Fall Book Fair!  On Friday, November 8th please dress as your favorite book character and bring the book to school with you.  Make sure that it's a book that you have either read or listened to an adult read to you.  Please check the flyer that went home for additional information.

Veterans Day Assembly

Join us for our 8th Annual Veterans Day Assembly

Sangster has a long tradition of celebrating Veterans Day with the community.  Please mark your calendar for Monday, November 11th, at 9:30 a.m.  Anyone is welcome, weather permitting.  Please arrive after the buses have exited the bus loop at 9:15 a.m.

Grades 4-6 will participate in the celebration outside in our bus loop by the flag pole.

Grades K-3 will watch the celebration streamed live into their classrooms.

Students are encouraged to wear red, white and blue.

The purpose of the celebration is to help raise awareness of our cherished values as a nation and help instill a strong sense of citizenship and patriotism in our students.  Every year Sangster holds this celebration as a reminder for our community of our country’s values, patriotism, tolerance and ability to have the freedoms we do today.

Teachers are also inviting Veterans and active military personnel to visit classrooms throughout the day.  Please contact your child’s teacher if you are interested in visiting.

The Fall Book Fair

The Book Fair is coming!  Mark your calendars and get your shopping lists ready. The Book Fair will be open each day during the Thanksgiving Lunches. Our annual Family Night at the Book Fair is Tuesday, November 19th from 5pm - 7:30pm.  25% of our sales come back to Sangster ES so that the school can buy books and technology for our students.  We are excited to see you there!

Outstanding Employee Nominations Due

The deadline is near.  If you would like to nominate a Sangster employee to be recognized, please do so no later than November 14th.

Every year Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) recognizes outstanding employees at all levels.  Once again this year, all schools in FCPS are encouraged to nominate an Outstanding Teacher, whose name will then go on to the pyramid level where a Pyramid Outstanding Teacher will be selected. Each of the five Regions will then select their Region Outstanding Teacher, who will serve as the finalists for the coveted FCPS Outstanding Teacher Award.

Schools will also select an Outstanding New Teacher (a teacher within his or her first three years of teaching) and have the option of submitting nominees for the other school-based award categories: Outstanding Principal, Outstanding Leader (e.g. Assistant Principal), Outstanding Professional Employee (e.g. School Counselor, School-Based Technology Specialist, Social Worker, School Psychologist, Technology Support Specialist), and Outstanding Operational Employee (e.g. Office Staff, Instructional Assistant, Custodial Staff, and Food Service Staff).  Nominations for Bus Driver will be processed through the transportation department.

We are asking you, the Sangster parent and guardian community, to help us gather names for this process. If you would like to nominate a Sangster staff member for any of the above awards, please send the name of your nominee and a short paragraph about him or her in an email to Tom Rowader, our awards liaison, at tjrowader@fcps.edu no later than Thursday, November 14th.  All responses will be kept confidential.  If you are nominating a staff member for the Outstanding Teacher or Outstanding New Teacher award, please address at least two of the following award criteria in your submission to Mr. Rowader:

• Instills in students a desire to learn and achieve
• Understands the individual needs of students, encourages their talents, and fosters their self-esteem
• Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of subject matter and the ability to share it effectively with students
• Fosters cooperative relationships and engages with their colleagues and the community
• Demonstrates outstanding leadership

We are excited that we can recognize so many outstanding employees.  If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Tom Rowader at tjrowader@fcps.edu.  We would love to hear from you!

Parent Night on Anxiety Awareness

Anxiety disorders affect one in eight children. Left untreated, children with anxiety are at a higher risk to perform poorly in school, miss out on important social activities, and engage in substance abuse according to the ADAA. Learn how to help children manage their anxiety by coming to the Parent Night on Anxiety Awareness on November 13, 2019 at the West Springfield High School Auditorium. Doors open at 6:30pm with a free screening of the documentary ANGST at 7pm. An expert panel discussion follows the screening and information on school and community resources will also be available. The event is sponsored by local school counselors, school administrators, the FCPS Region 4 office and PTAs/PTSAs.
