Weekly News From South County High School

From the Principal

Family,

Let me open with this.  There will be no further dance episodes by Mr. Morris for the duration of the year. That is all.

What a great Homecoming week!  The amount of student participation was awesome and that is a testament to the feeling of students feeling that they belong.  I also appreciate the support from the parent community to help students find their way.  Congratulations to the sophomore class for winning the Sprit Competitions! It was fun to watch all the students compete in the friendly games, and to see their peers cheer them on.  We also had a great time at homecoming with so many students coming out in the Black-Out! The Hype Squad was amazing!  The dance team took the field with 51 young Dancing Stallions and together they put on quite a show!  The halftime show featured the award-winning South County Marching Band and the crowning of the Homecoming Court.  And then to cap things off, we got a great win over Fairfax in the Homecoming Game.

Also, during the week on Wednesday, we had a great Fall Orchestra Concert.  Unfortunately, I had to miss this due to being under the weather, but I heard that the students once again under the direction of Mrs. Marci Swift, showed their stuff!  Earlier in the day, we celebrated together our classes at the Fall Pep Rally.  All in all, this was a very exciting week, and another reason I am so proud to serve the South County community.

Now for a little business.  We have been experiencing an uptick in students ordering food and having it delivered to school via Uber Eats and other delivery means.  We do not allow this as a part of our safety and security measures because we want to ensure we know who is coming to our building, and because students have been opening unauthorized doors to receive their deliveries.  Please be sure to have the conversation with your student about this violation.  With minimal numbers to secure our building as is, we really can’t afford to have access being granted to strangers by the student body.  Please know that if students are found having food delivered, that food is confiscated until the end of the day and returned to the student at that time.

The end of the quarter is here. Please review your students grades with them and have conversations about where they think they are academically.   Let’s work together to remind our students to continue their great momentum, and if there is work to do, to seek out the resources we have available to them. There is something for every student.  We are available to work with them to ensure they get, or stay on the right track.  Thank you once again for another great week!  Have an awesome weekend!  #OneStallion

Attendance Office/Early Dismissals

Please send a note with your student in the morning to give to the Attendance Office, first thing upon arrival, so that they can receive a pass for an early dismissal. Phones calls should be reserved for sickness, late arrivals, and unscheduled events. Not only does this ensure your student will dismissed on time but it also does not interrupt instructional time for other students as the pass is delivered. Please be considerate of all students.

Fee to Support FCPSOn

As part of FCPSOn, an annual technology support fee of $50 will be charged to high school students. This fee will help ensure students have access to the technology they need by defraying the cost to repair and replace equipment, ensuring all students have the necessary laptops for testing, and providing back-up laptops as a substitute as needed. All students will need access to the same software, which might not be compatible with self-provided laptops. The technology support fee is included in the FY 2020 Approved Budget.

Billing

The technology support fee will be billed centrally using FCPS’ e-commerce platform, My School Bucks (MSB), which retrieves information from the Student Information System (SIS). Students who have Free and Reduced status and have given consent to share their FRM status for a waiver or reduction of the technology support fee will be charged $25 for Reduced status; the fee will be waived for Free status.

The technology support fee will be billed on Monday after the end of first quarter of each school year for all eligible students who are enrolled at that time. Subsequent bills for students who are transferring into the school district will be issued on the first Monday after the end of the second and third quarters. There will be no proration of the fee.

Parents/guardians and students who do not have an MSB account will receive a bill from MSB to the primary email address recorded in SIS. They need to enroll in My School Bucks.

Student Obligations

Students who have not paid the fee will incur a student obligation.

Lost and Damaged Laptops

There will not be additional fees for incidental damage. However, schools will treat repeated instances of damage from negligence the same way they would treat negligent damage to any school property. Students may be financially liable for lost/stolen computers. If you need to purchase a replacement computer or power adapter they are available through MSB School Store.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards kicks off its search for America's top youth volunteers of the year.  This unique youth recognition program, founded 25 years ago by Prudential Financial in partnership with National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), honors middle level and high school students for making meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service.  The program gives schools an opportunity to reward and shine a spotlight on students who have distinguished themselves through volunteer activities - and an opportunity to call attention to the role that schools play in promoting community service.

Applications for 2020 awards are now open to students in grades 5-12 who have volunteered in the past year
