Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

It is beginning to feel like Fall!  With this cooler weather, please make sure your child comes to school dressed for an outside recess.  Please check the lost and found areas in our lobby and vestibule for those missing jackets or lunchboxes that did not make it home.  We would like to take a minute to say THANK YOU to our Veterans and active duty personnel by inviting them to a short musical program and light breakfast on Monday, November 12th in our café.  We would like thank Wegmans for their generous support of this event. Thank you for your continued support at Oak Hill through volunteering in the classrooms, café or through a PTA Committee.  We also thank you for your financial support by becoming PTA Members, purchasing Spirit Wear or books at our Book Fair, dining out at any of our Spirit Nights at local restaurants or making a donation for Oak Hill students.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to further support your child’s learning and experience at Oak Hill.  My door is always open!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Tip of the Week

tip

In Kindergarten, students learn to identify, describe, and create patterns.  As students get older, they learn to structure numbers 1-10 and they start to understand our number system is made up of tens.  Highlighting patterns within our number system helps students to develop flexibility in thinking about place value and composing and decomposing numbers.  This is a strategy that many students use as they represent numbers and also when they compute numbers mentally.  One way you can extend our learning at home is to foster conversations around patterns.  In K/1, look for patterns with shapes, numbers, objects.  In grades 2-4, look for patterns with numbers while you practice skip counting, counting money, or what kids notice when cooking or baking at home.  In grades 5-6, ask your child to come up with a rule for a pattern and challenge them to see if it always works.

When things don't go their way, they may become angry, disrespectful, defiant... or they may even avoid difficult tasks or withdraw. In this workshop, therapist-turned-Parenting Specialist Rachel Bailey will share with you the qualities that differentiate resilient children from those who crumble in the face of adversity, what to say and do to help your child handle challenges as they occur, and simple, realistic strategies that will improve your child's overall resilience.
