Announcements

Kilmer Medical Center - November 7, 8 and 11

With second quarter rapidly approaching it is almost time for our 8th grade students to participate in the Kilmer Medical Center. In order for this experience to go smoothly, we need 7 volunteers per class period to act as patients. This is a great time and the students get a lot out of the experience. We still have a number of slots that have not been filled. Please take a look to see if you have time to support our program. (https://tinyurl.com/kmed2019

Here Comes the Bus Mobile App

To help you know when your child’s bus is approaching your stop, FCPS is now using the Here Comes the Bus mobile app. Here Comes the Bus is a free school bus tracking app that can simplify morning and afternoon routines for parents and students by giving real-time bus location and text or email notification alerts, helping everybody get to the bus stop on time.

Here Comes the Bus® uses FCPS global positioning system (GPS) data and an easy-to-use customizable map that works on one or multiple devices, such as a tablet or smartphone.

Get detailed instructions on how to get started using the app here.

Reminders

Mental Health Wellness

On Tuesday November 12 (Martians and Pegasus teams) and Wednesday November 13 (Guardians of the Galaxy and Constellations teams), 8th grade students will participate in a school counseling lesson about A.C.T. (Acknowledge, Care, Tell). Students will be reminded about the steps to take when they have concerns about themselves or a friend. They will watch a brief video highlighting the warning signs of suicide and symptoms of depression, engage in a discussion facilitated by the school counselor, and identify a trusted adult within the school building. Students will have the opportunity to request to speak to a counselor about themselves or a friend if they have concerns based on the information presented. This lesson is a follow up lesson to the Mental Health Wellness Program students participated in during their seventh grade year.

If your child approaches you with concerns about a friend’s mental health, use the following numbers to help them get immediate assistance:

  • Fairfax County Police Non-Emergency Line: 703-691-2131
  • CrisisLink: 703-527-4077
  • CrisisText: Text NEEDHELP to 85511
  • ALWAYS use 911 for life-threatening emergencies

Survey for shuttle to Vienna Teen Center/Phoenix Club for registered (Phoenix Club) participants @3:30PM

Kilmer's After-School Program is looking to partner with the  Vienna Teen Center’s Club Phoenix.  One service that we are looking at potentially offering is a shuttle bus that would transport students from our KMS Afterschool Program to Club Phoenix. Only students with a completed  Kilmer MS Afterschool Registration Form and  Club Phoenix Registration Form will be able to use this service.  Students may participate in Club Phoenix activities until the center closes at 6:30PM Monday-Thursday and 10PM on Fridays. Parents/Guardians are responsible for transportation home from Vienna Teen Center. Please complete the  KMS Afterschool to Vienna Teen Center Shuttle Survey  so we can gauge Parent/Student interest. Survey results will be used to coordinate a schedule.  Vienna Teen Center Questions? Email Natalie Duncan Natalie.Duncan@ViennaVA.gov
