October is National Bullying Prevention Month! During classroom lessons, counselors are defining bullying behaviors, victims, and bystanders.

The students were also taught what to do when they see bullying occurring.  Students should be an active bystander and tell an adult.  Students should say, "Stop!" Walk away with the victim and tell an adult nearby.  If your child reports bullying, contact your child's teacher or school counselor.

Behavior:

At school, staff clearly teach students behavioral expectations throughout school settings. Just as we do with academic material, we should offer children the opportunity to first learn our behavior expectations and then practice those expectations. Staff have taught routines, such as walking in the hall, checking out books, sitting in their own space, etc. Parents can do the same at home  by clearly teaching home expectations such as how to make the bed, where to unpack their school belongings, clean up after themselves, etc. After you show and teach these routines to your child, be sure to practice with them.

Positivity Project:

      • In the past month classes explored the following character strengths: open-mindedness, integrity, perspective, and the "other people matter mindset:" being present and giving others my attention.   Perspective means that you appreciate when people see things in different ways and you have the ability to understand the world from multiple points of view. People who embody perspective are able to learn from their mistakes and make changes in their future. In the month of October, fifth grade students explored different characters' perspective during their reading groups and were able to identify Positivity Project strengths in their readings!
