Operation Medicine Cabinet Cleanout - Saturday, October 26 from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
October 26th is a drug take back day. It’s free and there are no questions asked. Safe drug disposal is very important because it prevents accidental poisoning, protects the environment, and prevents drug abuse. See the attached flier for location and more information.
As you know, opioid use has been on the rise nationally and here in Fairfax County. Opioid abuse is now the leading cause of unnatural death in Fairfax County according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. You can have a positive impact on preventing opioid abuse by doing a few simple things at home. Prescriptions in the home are one of the primary ways children gain access to opioids (i.e. OxyContin), and other addictive and harmful medications, such as benzodiazepines (i.e. Xanax). In a study completed by Academic Pediatrics (2018), researchers found that 35 percent of households with a child older than ten years old had an opioid prescription in the home and 66 percent of those people planned to keep the leftover opioids for future use. Additionally, the study found that 13 percent of respondents said they would give leftover medication to an adolescent in their home to manage pain. You can make a beneficial impact on this issue by not saving medication for future use, properly disposing of unused medication, and not giving your prescriptions to children. If you cannot make it to a designated drug disposal site on October 26, you can access a drug disposal kit at designated locations throughout the county. Use this web address to find a location near you https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health/drug-disposal.
Girls Group
A group called The Girls Circle will be offered in the fall for 10 weeks by our school social worker, Haleh Royanian. Her social work intern, Lauren Lucas will co-lead it with her. The group will focus on supporting the development of healthy friendships/relationships, self-esteem, teamwork, strengths, and diversity. The group will be offered after school on Wednesdays during the A session from 2:30-3:30. Please email Ms. Royanian hroyanian@fcps.edu or call her at 703.799.6141 if your child is interested in joining the group or if you have any further questions about the group.
Student Wellness
FCPS has a web page devoted to student Wellness: Tips and Strategies. There are videos, links to more webpages addressing specific topics, and resources. You can use this link to quickly access the website https://www.fcps.edu/student-wellness-tips.
Vaccinations are available at your local pharmacy, doctor’s office, health clinics or the Fairfax County Health Department: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health/flu/fight-flu. And remember, along with your flu shot there are several other ways you can protect yourself this season:
- Wash your hands often.
- Protect yourself from those who may be sick.
- Get plenty of rest.
- Cover your cough.
- Stay home whenever you are ill.
- Although the timing of flu season is unpredictable, seasonal flu activity typically begins in October and can last until May. It is recommended that you take action sooner rather than later to fight this serious, yet preventable disease.
- Lastly, the CDC provides additional resources that will help you maintain optimal health this year. Be sure to check out the video below and learn more about how you can #FightFlu (Source: CDC).
 STUDENT-PARENT SURVEY
FOR FEDERAL IMPACT AID
Beginning on October 21, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.
Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 30. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

SCREENAGERS DOCUMENTARY SCREENING
Are you watching your kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.
In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.
In conjunction with the PTA from Stratford Elementary, we will bring SCREENAGERS to our community. Everyone is invited. On November, 13 at 6:30 pm in the smaller auditorium at CSMS, we will run the movie for parents and students who are age 10 and up. Afterward plan to stay for a short discussion on the findings from the movie. We’d also like to hear from parents and students their position on screen usage and the impact in your home.
The movie runs approximately 60 minutes and the discussion afterward will be about 30 minutes.
There is no cost to attend this event, but we do ask that you register using this link: https://www.eventcombo.com/e/screenagers-film-presented-by-carl-sandburg-middle-school-36643.

JOIN THE SANDBURG PTA
The PTA is an active organization that sponsors several activities and events throughout the school year for the benefit of our students, teachers and staff here at CSMS. Joining the PTA provides instant financial support for our students and is a great way to stay informed about what’s happening at Carl Sandburg Middle School.
Over $24,000 was raised from PTA membership, donations and fundraising events last year. Those funds were used to support teacher appreciation activities, lighting for the auditorium, technology for the library, clubs, cafeteria needs and education department requests. Help us exceed that amount this year by joining the Carl Sandburg Middle School PTA!
While fundraising is a focus for the PTA, volunteers are even more important to the success of our organization. There will be many opportunities for parents to volunteer their time this year...a few include our upcoming Season of Giving events that take place around Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Library will need volunteers to help with the Book Fair and the Career Fair. We can always use extra hands for the setup of our Teacher Appreciation events, as well as support on Chik-Fil-A nights and at our Student-Teacher Basketball game in the Spring. The PTA welcomes all new members and encourages everyone to get involved in any way you can. Keep an eye out for these volunteer requests.
To join the PTA go to http://carlsandburgpta.ch2v.com/content.asp?PageID=0 and select the membership level that best suits you. There is also an option to make a tax-deductible donation, and 100% of all donations go directly to the school!
Email questions to PTA Membership Chair Rachel Meadows at rachelcmeadows@gmail.com.
PTA information, including details about fundraisers, teacher appreciation and membership can be found on our website at this link: http://carlsandburgpta.ch2v.com. We also post regularly to social media, so follow Carl Sandburg Middle School PTA on both Facebook and Twitter
