Braddock District School Board Member - Megan McLaughlin

As your School Board Member, I value strong partnerships between FCPS and our families. Therefore, I want to make you aware of two important parent meetings related to Students with Disabilities and Teen Vaping. (Specific details about these meetings are listed at the bottom of this message).

Tomorrow Night (Tuesday), parents can attend a Meet & Greet with the School Board’s Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities (ACSD). This committee of community appointees is currently examining FCPS’ parental communications practices related to services for students with disabilities. The committee is also focused on improving and strengthening the relationship between parents of students with disabilities and FCPS school staff and central office staff. To learn more about this committee, click here.

Prior to this meeting, the Fairfax County Special Education PTA (SEPTA) is also hosting a Meet & Greet at the same location. SEPTA is a PTA organization affiliated with the State and National PTA, but is specifically established to address the unique needs of students with special needs. To learn more about this organization, click here.

On Thursday Night, Robinson PTSO is hosting a Parent Information Night related to the dangers of teen vaping. The presentation will be given by FCPS staff experts on the harmful effects of vaping on teen brain health, lung health, and the risks of addiction. They will also discuss how parents can help our community prevention efforts. There has been a dramatic rise of teen vaping both nationally and within FCPS. Recent survey results reveal that 32%-37% of 10th graders-12th graders have reported vaping in the past year. I look forward to attending this discussion and hope many of you can come as well.

Again, please see specific meeting details listed below, and thank you for being engaged in your child’s education.
