Did you know…The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) just released a new definition of addiction after a four-year process involving more than 80 experts. Dr. Michael Miller, past president of ASAM who oversaw the development of the new definition writes, "Many behaviors driven by addiction are real problems and sometimes criminal acts. But the disease is about brains, not drugs. It's about underlying neurology, not outward actions."

STUDENT-PARENT SURVEY FOR FEDERAL IMPACT AID

Beginning on October 21, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 30. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Governor's School Information Session

Current 10th and 11th grade students:

The 2020 Virginia Summer Governor’s School is beginning its application process. This unpaid summer program is for highly motivated students who are looking for a challenging summer experience. Programs are offered in Visual and Performing Arts, Humanities, Math/Science/Tech, Agriculture, Life Science/Medicine, and Mentorships in Engineering and Life Sciences.  The selection process is extremely competitive.  Most students selected rank in the top 10% of their class and have scored in the 90th percentile on standardized measures of ability or achievement tests.  These residential programs run from late June to late July.  Only students who are available during that time frame and whose records match these criteria should apply.

Ms. Malone will hold an interest meeting for current 10th and 11th grade students:

Wednesday, October 22nd during Saxon Time – Langley Lecture Hall

Wednesday, October 23rd after school - Career Center

Please see the VDOE website for further information:
