A message from Mr. Chiet, Principal & Mrs. O'Donovan, Assistant Principal

Dear Timber Lane Families,

We are excited for another great week at Timber Lane!  Just a reminder that tomorrow, Monday October 14th is a School Planning Day (Student Holiday).  Students do not report to school tomorrow, October 14th.  We will see students back on Tuesday October 15th.

We are looking forward to our upcoming Tiger Talks at the James Lee Community Center on Tuesday October 15th from 6:00pm-7:00pm.  Mr. Chiet and Mrs. O'Donovan will be excited to meet and talk with some of our Timber Lane families.  Please plan on coming out that evening, the weather is expected to be beautiful!  Some of the topics of conversation at this event will help everyone gain an understanding of how different education/schooling is in the U.S., we will discuss the importance of volunteering and attending school functions, and we will share ideas of how families can help their child at home even with a language barrier.

Every Wednesday this year we will continue to have Open Library/STEM Night for our families 5:30-7:00pm.  This is a weekly event where students can take part in an academic opportunity with a parent - parents must be present and with children the whole time.  Every Wednesday you can read with your child or take part in a STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Math) activity.  Families are also welcome to use our laptops for any computer access needs you may have. :)

On Friday as the sixth grade field trip was arriving late due to traffic, Ms. Yesenia, Mrs. Jackson, Ms. Bessey, & Mrs. Roberts sprung into action and plated dozens of lunches before the kitchen closed.  What a great team effort!  Thank you, team!

Parents Appreciating Wonderful Staff (PAWS)

Have you had a wonderful experience with a Timber Lane Staff member that you would like to share with Mr. Chiet?  The Timber Lane Website now has a form you can complete to quickly praise that staff member!  The PAWS link can be found on the Timber Lane Elementary School website homepage (please see image below).  Once you share a little bit about your experience, a template will be generated and emailed to Mr. Chiet.  Once received we will then print and celebrate with that staff member!

Digital Citizenship

At Timber Lane Elementary school, we are fortunate to be able to provide an FCPS laptop to each student in grades 3-6.  Each K-2 class has 4 laptops to use in learning centers.  During the first few weeks of school, students have been learning about appropriate use and care of these devices.   FCPS provides laptops to students as a tool for learning that teachers incorporate, along with other tools like books, journals, and manipulatives, into their instructional program. Digital Citizenship is comprised of the following components: media balance and well-being, digital footprint and identity, privacy and security, relationships and communication, cyberbullying and digital drama, and news/media literacy.    Digital Citizenship Week occurs the week of Oct. 21-25.  Look for tips, reminders, and suggestions on how parents can help educate their children about the importance of being good digital citizens on our Timber Lane Twitter page @TimberLaneES and on our Timber Lane Facebook Page (Timber Lane Elementary School – TLES).

Digital Tools Permission Form

FCPS rigorously evaluates tools that support student learning while keeping students, teachers and staff safe.  Certain tools are conditionally approved and require parental approval for use.  This Digital Tools Parent Permission Form will be sent home next week.  Please take the time to sign and return the form to Timber Lane Elementary.  There are many tools among the list on this form that provide fantastic opportunities to use higher level thinking strategies and skills to create meaningful products that demonstrate understanding of important skills and concepts.
