Announcements and Upcoming Events

Next Week’s Schedule

Monday, October 14 is a Student Holiday and a School Planning Day for staff. The remainder of the week will be a regular schedule.

Tiger Night is Tonight

It’s not too late to join us for tonight’s Tiger Night social. Tiger Night, a Twain student-only event, is Friday, October 11 from 6:30-8:30. There is something for everyone including basketball tournament, DJ playing music, Wii games, Board Games, Minute to Win it, Improv, Karaoke, and more. $5 at the door. Pizza on sale for $2, everything else is $1.

PTA Meeting

Join us on October 17th at 7 PM for our next PTA meeting. After some quick PTA business, we’ll be pleased to hear from Mary Beth Harrison Cunningham, managing director of FCPS Parent Resource Center. She’ll be giving valuable information on free resources that are available through this center. Plan to be there!

Innerspace Science

Do you know a student fascinated by the undersea world and the technologies for exploring it?  Innerspacescience.org is a group whose members build and operate manned submersibles, which are made available to scientists at no cost. On land, they use the subs to excite students about STEM and ocean conservation. A few weeks ago, National Public Radio featured them on their program "All Things Considered" and the piece makes a great introduction:  https://www.npr.org/2019/09/02/755571204/submarine-hobbyists-help-researchers-on-montanas-flathead-lake

The organization's founder, Alec Smyth, is also on the crew of Pisces VI, a research submarine that enters service in 2020 with missions to places like Antarctica and the Indian Ocean. Alec will be offering a two month after-school program at Sandburg, during which students will get to see a two-person sub and learn about physics, engineering, marine ecology, and marine conservation. It is the program's third year at our school and it has received great reviews from students and parents.

The cost of the program is $150, but Innerspace Science doesn't want anyone left out for economic reasons - anyone who can't afford the program can earn a scholarship by writing an essay. To register for this program or learn more about it, please email Alec Smyth at alecsmyth@gmail.com

The first meeting for Innerspace Science will be on Monday, October 21st at 2:30 in the Lecture Hall.
