News from Your Advanced Academics Resource Teachers

We are so excited about the start of this school year! One of our school goals is to make sure that every student in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade has an Advanced Academics Program (AAP) curriculum experience.

The year started out with a parent information night, which highlighted the Fairfax County Continuum of Services for Advanced Academics, that was held on Monday, September 23, 2019, at 6:30 PM, in the cafeteria. If you missed the presentation, which was open to all K-5 families, you may access it on the FCPS website under Parent Presentations at

In fact, the FCPS Advanced Academics Program (AAP) office spent the summer updating the website to make it more user friendly for all families. We hope that you enjoy it!

Mark your calendars for our next parent information night. It will be for 2nd grade-5th grade parents who are interested in referring their student for Level IV Advanced Academic Program services. The information night will be held on December 9, 2019, at 6:30 PM, in the Glen Forest Cafeteria.

Did you miss our Odyssey of the Mind information night? Well, we are starting to form teams. However, each team needs at least one coach, so we need you!

Look for the opportunity to signup in your student’s Tuesday folder. If you would like more information, you may access the official Odyssey of the Mind website at https://www.odysseyofthemind.com/ or you may contact our school coordinator, Patty Edwards, at pwedwards1@fcps.edu .

Did you know that we have a liaison to Thomas Jefferson School of Science and Technology? She makes sure to notify our school of STEM activities around the County. Most of these activities are at no cost to the families. Please see the attached flyer for an upcoming STEM festival on Saturday, October 19, 2019, from 3-7 PM, at Walt Whitman Middle School, in Alexandria, VA.

Stay tuned for highlights about AAP experiences in each of the grade levels and the Level IV classrooms.
