Announcements from Herndon Middle School 10/08/19

Residency Guidelines Letter

A letter regarding Residency Guidelines was sent out to all families last week.  This generic letter is simply letting families know if they move or are planning to move, FCPS requires documentation in order to update the Student Information System and the students Emergency Care Form.

If mail is returned to the school, by the United States Postal Service, we will contact you to see if there has been a change in your residency.

Herndon Middle School Recognition for Excellence in Equity

Our school will be honored at the School Board meeting on October 24th when we receive the Superintendent’s Excellence in Equity Award. Dr. Brabrand and the School Board have created a new and very important recognition to celebrate selected school’s progress as we continue to raise the bar and close student achievement gaps. After a careful analysis of the Division SOL data, our school has accomplished one or several of the following milestones: Top 10 average increase across ALL reporting groups in math. Congratulations to our whole school community and thank you to our math teachers and students for the hard work.

Changes in our Bell Schedule During Lunches and Dismissal

Beginning Today, October 8th, the bell schedule will be adjusted to allow for better lunch transitions. The updated schedule is linked here. The lunches will now dismiss with three minutes in between each lunch so that we don’t have students coming and going at the same time. We will also have a signal/chime at 2:12 to release the first floor for dismissal. This is for safety and order in the halls.

Say Something and #OTHERPEOPLEMATTER Spirit Week

This week students will be participating in a range of activities and lessons designed by the Student Services department. See attached. On Wednesday the 16th and Thursday the 17th we will have an adjusted schedule to allow students to start/continue developing their Student Learning Plan on Naviance. This is a plan that will grow with students through high school. Students log into Naviance through their Blackboard account. Families are encouraged to review the Student Learning Plan and wealth of resources available on Naviance with thier student.

Seventh graders will be completing the Strength Explorers survey, writing a SMART Goal, and begin building their resume.

Eighth graders will be completing the Career Cluster survey, writing a SMART Goal, and continue developing their resume.

All students will also participate in lessons designed around building coping and executive functioning skills along with activities to become more mindful of their social tolerance.

On Thursday, we will have a school wide Pep Rally to continue supporting our mission of community building and positivity because #OTHERPEOPLEMATTER!

Parent Volunteers for Vision and Hearing

clinic

Volunteers are needed on October 23,24,25 for 7th Grade Vision and Hearing Screening.  No experience is necessary, and any adult (parent, grandparent, adult sibling) is welcome.  You can volunteer for any or all of the screening periods on each day.  Any amount of time would be appreciated.  Adults do not need to have a student in 7th grade to help.

If you are looking for a one-time opportunity to volunteer, this is it!  It’s a great opportunity for parents to meet your 7th grader’s classmates.

Please sing up using the link below.
