Justice Newsletter - October 6, 2019

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." ~ Thomas Edison

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

I hope that you are enjoying your weekend.

Justice High School has been selected to receive the Superintendent’s Excellence in Equity Award. The award recognizes schools who have made significant gains in closing student achievement gaps as well as increasing overall SOL pass rates for all students in math and reading during the 2018-19 school year. We will be recognized at the School Board meeting on October 24, 2019 at 7:00 PM.

Recently I read a study on adolescent literacy. Did you know that the older your student gets, the less they tend to read for pleasure. The study found that one in every three teenagers has not read a book for pleasure in a year. Reading is a skill that needs practice to develop. Students who read for pleasure show stronger reading comprehension skills, writing skills and overall tend to do better in school. Please encourage your student to take the time to enjoy a good book. Consider reading alongside with them. If you are not sure what books might be a good match for your student, visit the American Library Association  for recent "teens" top ten lists of books voted by other teens.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or school staff. We are happy to help.

Free & Reduced Priced Meals

We have many families who have not reapplied for the Free and Reduce Meals Program. This process requires families to apply at the beginning of every school year.  If families do not reapply their number will be inactivated in early October. The Free and Reduced Meals application is now online for faster processing. Please also complete the consent to share information as this can allow the school to waive course fees and receive reduced fees for other activities. More information and a link to the application can be found at:  https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/food-and-nutrition-programs/free-and-reduced-price-meals

Pathway to the Baccalaureate Program

Seniors interested in applying to the NOVA Pathways Program must attend one session during the lunch block in the Career Center on Monday, October 7th. Students will be working on the online application. NOVA staff is keeping track of who is attending these workshops to help determine placement in the program. If students are not able to attend or have further questions, please see Ms. Grande in the Career Center (J207H).

Senior Transcripts/Letters of Recommendation

Students must turn in their transcript requests to the Student Services office 30 days in advance of the college deadline. Students who are applying to colleges with a November 1st deadline need to submit their requests by October 1st. These reminders are sent in an effort to avoid unnecessary stress. Requests forms are available on the counselor’s Google Classroom site and in Student Services. Please contact your child’s counselor if you have any questions.

Please join us for our next scheduled coffee on Friday, October 25th from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. in the Career Center (J207H in the library).

Naviance & College Visits

Each year about 100 colleges visit Justice HS. The schedule for college visits is available in Naviance Student which students access through their Blackboard account and parents may access through their FCPS 24-7 Learning: Parent View account. Once in Naviance Student, click on colleges > see a few visits > show more. Juniors and seniors can register to meet with college admissions counselors to get school information, discuss their applications and answer questions. Visits are held at different times during the school day from mid-September through mid-December and last for approximately 30 minutes. The registration on Naviance Student will serve as the student’s pass for the visit.

College Fair & College Night

FCPS HS students and their families are invited to attend the 2019 College Fair on Sunday, October 20th at Fair Oaks Mall and College Night on Monday, October 21st at Hayfield Secondary School. Both events provide opportunities for college-bound students and their families to gather information from a variety of schools. Approximately 300 colleges and universities are represented, including two- and four-year colleges and military academies. In addition, College Night provides a variety of college readiness workshops. Click here for more information and to register
