CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR FAIRFAX HS GOLF TEAM!

Dear Family Fairfax,

What a beautiful week!  When I walked in this morning, I walked in carrying a Regional Championship trophy from our golf team.  I even had a song and a dance, but you had to be present to see it.  I shared with our parents who attended the principal’s coffee this morning that one of the best parts to watching our players on the field is seeing the other team members and fans cheering and supporting them along.  It makes our family feel all the more connected, and it makes me proud each time I attend an event. The week also included our fearless Field Hockey and Volleyball teams fiercely and exhaustingly battling away--These ladies always, always make us proud to be at Fairfax!

Speaking of coffees, conversation ensued around grading practices at FHS and in FCPS as a whole. I shared with the group that my department chairs will focus some of their efforts on exploring our current grading practices at FHS as well as surrounding high schools with an equity lens.  In the meantime our teachers are following the County’s grading guidelines found here:  FCPS Grading  A challenge educators face is the effect of the open and live gradebooks, so I ask that you first contact your student’s teacher with grading concerns and allow 48 hours for a response.  I expect our teachers to be with students, learning from other teachers, offering feedback, creating and designing lesson plans, and engaged in professional learning during the school day, so there is little, if any, time that is built in for emailing.  If you feel that you still have a concern, the next avenue would be the department administrator:  (I, of course, am always here for you as well!)

  • Kevin Greata:  Math (Chair Thresa O’Neill) and Special Education (Chair Elaine Woo)
  • Asma Junco:  Science (Chair Cathy Williams)  and World Languages (Chair Kate Tiffany)
  • Maureen Keck:  Social Studies (Chair Anna Weaver)  and Visual Arts (Chair PJ Irving)
  • Troy Ketch: English (Chair Heather Davids) and ESOL (Chair Elissa Robinson)
  • Andrea Cook:  CTE (Chair DeDe McCoy) and Performing Arts (Chair Erich Dicenzo)
  • Nancy Melnick:  Student Leadership and HPE (Chair Cathy Horacek)

Last Friday, after my NYC, I was presented the Homecoming football for our first Homecoming win in, I am told, SEVEN years!  With a current 3-1 record, I am hopeful for our Pride tonight at the St. James.

Here is to some timely, cooler weather this weekend!

Developing Digital Citizenship

As Fairfax High School begins the journey of developing Digital Citizens. Jason Smolinski, John King, and Tim Brown have put together some questions they would like to get answered.  Please take a few minutes to answer as many of these questions that you feel would help us enhance what you are teaching at home.  Thank you for taking the time and please feel free to reach out to Tim Brown (twbrown@fcps.edu) if you want to discuss any of these topics.
