Justice Newsletter - September 29, 2019

"Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or the same way." ~ George Evans

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

I hope that you are enjoying your weekend.

We enjoyed meeting with our seniors' parents last week for our first parent coffee and look forward to our next scheduled parent coffee on Friday, October 25th from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. in the Career Center (J207H in the library).

This Tuesday marks the beginning of Den Time intervention and enrichment cycles. This will allow students the opportunity to receive remediation based on their specific needs. In addition, students will have time to complete homework with tutor support, study for tests, or pursue another academic interest. Den days/times are on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning at 10:42 – 11:12 AM. Students will receive their Den Day locations during an orientation session on Monday. Return Time also begins this week and the return time rotation can be found on the Justice HS website.

We continue to work with our students to ensure that they are in class on time. Our students on average have one more minute of passing time than most of the other high schools. We are one of the few schools to offer second chance breakfast. Students can choose to eat breakfast when they arrive at school as early as 7:45 AM or they can wait and grab a “go bag” breakfast at 9:38 AM.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or school staff. We are happy to help.

Free & Reduced Priced Meals

Families must reapply every year to receive free or reduced meals. If families do not reapply their number will be inactivated in early October. The Free and Reduced Meals application is now online for faster processing. Please also complete the consent to share information as this can allow the school to waive course fees and receive reduced fees for other activities. More information and a link to the application can be found at:  https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/food-and-nutrition-programs/free-and-reduced-price-meals

PSAT Day - Scheduled Activities for 9th and 12th Grade Students

On October 16th, our 10th and 11th grade students will participate in the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). In addition to the PSAT, we have a number of activities planned and taking place for our 9th and 12th grade students. Our 9th grade students will participate in activities and authentic learning experiences that are focused on continuing to support their transition to high school. Our 12th grade students will participate in a senior meeting, team-building activities, and a panel of former Justice HS students who will provide advice and answer questions to help our students navigate their senior year. The 12th grade IB diploma candidates will read, research and write so that they can meet the October 17 Extended Essay deadline, which consists of a completed extended essay draft at least 3,500 words. Attendance is required for all students and please note, that October 16th is a two hour early release day. Students will be released at 12:55 PM.

Justice HS Nomination Scholarships - Class of 2020

There are a number of scholarships that are available for seniors for which Justice HS can nominate one student for consideration. Information is available online via Naviance and in the Career Center. The Career Center will collect self-nomination forms and then a committee will determine which students move forward as the Justice HS nominee for consideration.

Senior Transcripts/Letters of Recommendation

Students must turn in their transcript requests to the Student Services office 30 days in advance of the college deadline. Students who are applying to colleges with a November 1st deadline need to submit their requests by October 1st. These reminders are sent in an effort to avoid unnecessary stress. Requests forms are available on the counselor’s Google Classroom site and in Student Services. Please contact your child’s counselor if you have any questions.

World Languages Exam

The 2019 Credit Exam for World Languages will be administered November 6 – 8, 2019. Students who take the credit exam will now have the opportunity to earn up to three credits, based on demonstrated proficiency. Thirty (30) languages will be assessed via the FCPS Credit Exam. Registration closes on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. Late registrations will not be accepted. Students must contact their school counselor to register. More information here.

Naviance & College Visits

Each year about 100 colleges visit Justice HS. The schedule for college visits is available in Naviance Student which students access through their Blackboard account and parents may access through their FCPS 24-7 Learning: Parent View account. Once in Naviance Student, click on colleges > see a few visits > show more. Juniors and seniors can register to meet with college admissions counselors to get school information, discuss their applications and answer questions. Visits are held at different times during the school day from mid-September through mid-December and last for approximately 30 minutes. The registration on Naviance Student will serve as the student’s pass for the visit.

College Fair & College Night

FCPS HS students and their families are invited to attend the 2019 College Fair on Sunday, October 20th at Fair Oaks Mall and College Night on Monday, October 21st at Hayfield Secondary School.
