Dress Code Reminder

Parents, summer seems to be hanging around and so does summer clothing.  Please be reminded of the following SR&R regulation around appropriate dress.  We have had to ask some students to cover up or change clothes, please review this at home.  Bolded below is the areas of most frequent clothing issues.

“All students are expected to dress appropriately for a K-12 educational environment. Any clothing that interferes with or disrupts the educational environment is unacceptable. Clothing with language or images that are vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene; or clothing that promotes illegal or violent conduct, such as gang symbols, the unlawful use of weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia; or clothing that contains threats is prohibited. Clothing should fit, be neat and clean, and conform to standards of safety, good taste, and decency. Clothing that exposes private areas or an excessive amount of bare skin is prohibited. Examples of prohibited clothing include, but are not limited to: sagging or low-cut pants, tube or halter tops, studded or chain belts, clothing constructed of see-through materials, and head coverings unless required for religious or medical purposes. A principal may provide additional examples to his or her school community that are approved by the regional assistant superintendent. Discussion about dress code violations shall be held privately and maintain the dignity of the student. Parents of students requiring accommodation for religious beliefs, disabilities, or other good reasons should contact the principal. Students not complying with this code will be asked to cover the noncomplying clothing, change clothes, or go home. Repeated infractions will result in disciplinary action.”   https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/SRR1920.pdf

  • Effective and efficient government.
  • Health and environment.

Parents as Partners Series - Session 1

In response to the Family Engagement Survey administered during the 2018-19 School Year, Woodson is focusing on sharing information with parents to help parents improve their child’s learning and to identify and develop social and emotional skills for students to be successful.  In addition, we are looking for ways to maintain two way communication between families and the school.

One way we are engaging families is through monthly parent seminars.  In addition to the PTSO meetings (held on the second Tuesday of each month), administrators and counselors will plan and deliver a monthly seminar based on various topics.

September’s Parents as Partners seminar will address Study Skills and will take place on Wednesday, September 25th at 5:30 p.m. in Cafeteria A.

One task that is essential for all students and their success in high school is developing a way to study. Each student has to find their own routine. The parent seminar will feature a few of our wonderful veteran teachers and information about how to help your child find success while studying. More information will be posted on our website with materials posted after the session for those that are not able to attend.

Fall Sports Highlights

The Varsity field hockey team hosted the West Springfield Spartans and the Washington and Liberty Generals.  Fantastic student turn-out created a great atmosphere for this year’s Senior Night.  Prior to the match, the Lady Cavs recognized seniors Sidney Allen, Anabel Heisley, Bridget Cassata, Anna Stribling, Margaret Stephan, Rachel Hartzler, and Izzy Gonzales.  The Spartans got on the scoreboard first, but Woodson quickly responded through Kyleigh Poot and Gonzales to Heisley for the goal.  Heisley and Gonzales linked up to provide the means for Stephan to finish the go-ahead goal.  Stephan was good for a second and her brace.  Great ball play involving Audrey Fisher and Stephan put Gonzales one-on-one with goalie for another Woodson goal.  With unrelenting energy, Stribling made a solo drive for the fifth and Katie Williams closed the scoring account for the evening.  Cavs win, 6-1.

Against the Generals, Katie Williams opened the goal scoring .  Allen had a rapid succession of great saves.  Off an assist from Gweneth Durosko, Williams’ golden stick continued to shine.  It was a run and cross from Stephan that set-up Williams’ hat trick.  Allen and Kelley Gross were stalwart stick minders and along with the defensive line including Cassata, Hartzler, Poot, Emmy Rummel, and Annika McGinn preserved the clean sheet.  Cavs win, 3-0.

Co-Ed Golf

On September 9, the Cavs faced Annandale and Yorktown in a tri-match at Jefferson District Golf Course, finishing second to earn another match win.  Scores were Yorktown 154, Cavs 164, Annandale 206.  Zara Karim and Tytan Matthews led the Cavs with 40s, freshman Leo Lee broke shot a 41, and Tommy Stribling 43.

The Cavs next compete in the Patriot District Tournament at Twin Lakes on September 24.  The top 3 teams plus the top 6 individual scores of players outside the top 3 teams move on to the Occoquan Region on October 3.  The Cavs have a great shot to advance!

Also of note, Amelia Noca and Zara Karim have both auto-qualified for the Girls Zone 4A Regional Tournament at Laurel Hill Golf Club on October 23.  The girls will compete to earn spots in the Girls VHSL State Championships in Harrisonburg on October 28-29.

Girls volleyball faced South County on Tuesday night. They fought hard but finished the first two sets 20-25 and 25-27. In the third set, Woodson’s back row defense led by Jordan Lyons and Jaden Reasor led the team to win the next two sets 25-22. With excellent blocking and hitting the girls took the fourth set 25-19. Woodson continued to play strong  to the end of the fifth set only losing 10-15 after a good fight. They are ready to make a comeback and win against West Springfield at WTW Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7:15.
