Meet Ms. Wang, Math Teacher:

Ms. Wang was born and raised in China. She attended both Chinese secondary high school and N.Y.C high school. This particular learning experience enables Ms. Wang to explore more strategies to solve math problems with students. She received her undergraduate degree from SUNY New Paltz with a major in Adolescent education-mathematics and a minor in Art Studio. SUNY New Paltz has a tradition at the close each semester to honor the efforts of distinguished graduates to represent the best of each of the academic departments. Ms. Wang was nominated by the chair of the Secondary Education Department as an Outstanding Graduate of SUNY New Paltz in 2016. She also received her Mastered degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. She had various teaching experiences in New York City public school. She has taught in Eleanor Roosevelt High School, which is a top 20th public school in New York City. She loves helping students develop a passion for math. She enjoys painting, baking, cooking and creating art craft in her free time.

Taylor

Our new parent liaison, Susie Taylor, grew up with her five sisters right across the street in Waynewood. She has recently returned to the area with her 12 year old son after living in Colorado for a number of years. Susie is fluent in Spanish and has many years experience teaching ESOL, supporting school success and connecting families with local services and opportunities. She looks forward to getting to know and supporting the Carl Sandburg Middle School community.

Counselor Corner

Community Coffee

Come and join us for our first Community Coffee of the year. We will have a brief informational session that will put focus on cares, concerns, and questions that will help your child have a great start to their academic year. We look forward to seeing you September 30th at 8:00 AM in the Carl Sandburg Cafeteria!

SEXUAL HARRASSMENT AND BULLYING LESSONS CONDUCTED BY OUR SCHOOL COUNSELORS

Hello, Sandburg Parents! As a Fairfax County Schools mandate, counselors will talk to all students in their physical education classes next about sexual harassment and bullying.  The definition of the topic will be discussed as well as ways children can handle these kinds of situations, should the need arise. The lessons will be delivered in a fun and up-beat way, without distorting the importance of this social phenomenon.

Earn up to 2 World Language High School Credits!  Register with your counselor to take the “World Language Proficiency Exam” that will take place on November 7th at 2:30 pm in the cafeteria.  Registration will be from September 9 to October 10!  There will be no late registrations accepted.”

Is your child stressed out?  While most kids and teens aren’t dealing with bills, difficult bosses, and frustrating commutes, there are plenty of situations that can cause them stress. Some stress may seem just a part of growing up, but there are also children and teens who are dealing with more serious stressors.  Check out the attached flyer about Stress.  And, if you are concerned that your child may be at risk for harming themselves, please reach out to your child’s counselor for help.

JOIN THE SANDBURG PTA

The PTA is an active organization that sponsors several activities and events throughout the school year for the benefit of our students, teachers and staff here at CSMS. Joining the PTA provides instant financial support for our students and is a great way to stay informed about what’s happening at Carl Sandburg Middle School.

Over $24,000 was raised from PTA membership, donations and fundraising events last year. Those funds were used to support teacher appreciation activities, lighting for the auditorium, technology for the library, clubs, cafeteria needs and education department requests. Help us exceed that amount this year by joining the Carl Sandburg Middle School PTA!

While fundraising is a focus for the PTA, volunteers are even more important to the success of our organization. There will be many opportunities for parents to volunteer their time this year...a few include our upcoming Season of Giving events that take place around Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Library will need volunteers to help with the Book Fair and the Career Fair. We can always use extra hands for the setup of our Teacher Appreciation events, as well as support on Chik-Fil-A nights and at our Student-Teacher Basketball game in the Spring.  The PTA welcomes all new members and encourages everyone to get involved in any way you can. Keep an eye out for these volunteer requests.

To join the PTA go to http://carlsandburgpta.ch2v.com/content.asp?PageID=0 and select the membership level that best suits you. There is also an option to make a tax-deductible donation, and 100% of all donations go directly to the school!

Email questions to PTA Membership Chair Rachel Meadows at rachelcmeadows@gmail.com.

PTA information, including details about fundraisers, teacher appreciation and membership can be found on our website at this link: http://carlsandburgpta.ch2v.com. We also post regularly to social media, so follow Carl Sandburg Middle School PTA on both Facebook and Twitter.

CSMS CLINIC NEEDS YOUR HELP

Ms. Hoffman, our school Clinic supervisor, is coordinating a snacks program for students who need a little extra to eat or drink. Too many students at our school spend some time distracted by hunger and the PTA is working with her to support students.

Please consider donating if you can. Donations can be dropped off in the school office labeled Clinic Snack Program.

Here is the link to see what we need and to sign up to help out!  Thank you!
