Halley Safety Reminders

Keeping Your Child Safe

All exterior doors are locked during school hours. To enter the building, go to Entrance #1, push the doorbell, and the front office will remotely unlock the door. Upon entering, please report to the office. To maintain the momentum of instruction, forgotten lunches and materials will be delivered by office staff, or students will be called down to the office to get their forgotten items.

For any change in a child’s typical transportation arrangements, send a note to the teacher indicating the date of the change, the duration of the change, and the reason for the change.  Students may not ride a non-designated school bus home with a friend as these decisions must be approved with FCPS transportation. For safety, we also ask that students get off at their designated stop only.

If picking up a student before the end of school, provide notice to the teacher and school office whenever possible to avoid confusion for your child.  If a student must leave unexpectedly, please try to alert the office at least one hour ahead of time.

During arrival and dismissal, please follow the established rules and travel routes for the safety of all.  Parents who wish to drop off or pick up their students will need to use the Kiss & Ride loop or park on the street and walk up to the building using the designated crosswalks.  For everyone’s safety, do not walk between cars in the Kiss & Ride loop. We ask that parents follow the established procedures for Kiss & Ride.  This will allow you to get your little Hornet as quickly and efficiently as possible and model safe procedures for our students.  Please follow the direction of staff at Kiss & Ride.  They will let you know what to do!

2019-20 Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights

Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.

In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available—a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Get more information and view the 2019-20 Opt-Out Booklets

The 2019-20 Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms flier is now online at http://fcpsnet.fcps.edu/cco/strategiccomm/pubs/optoutflier.pdf. Any parent or guardian who objects to his or her child’s participation in any or all of the described activities should complete and return the appropriate form(s) to your child’s homeroom teacher.

Universal Screener

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted a universal screener assessment for use with all elementary school students in kindergarten through grade 6. The universal screener assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. Students in kindergarten will receive screening for reading only. Students in grades 1-6 will receive screening for both mathematics and reading.

The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on universal screener results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support. The universal screener reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary students.

The universal screener and any necessary follow-up assessments will be given at the beginning of the school year. Depending on grade level and previous screener performance, students may receive screening again in the winter and/or in the spring. Schools set the specific dates for testing in each class. For the expected dates when your child will test, please contact your child’s teacher.

Additional information, including a short video, about the universal screener in FCPS can be found at this webpage: https://www.fcps.edu/node/33718. If you have further questions about this assessment, please contact your child’s teacher.
