Positivity Project – Curiosity
A curious person likes exploration and discovery — and asks lots of questions because they want to learn more about anything and everything. Our innate urge for discovery and exploration is a key element of our human desire for wisdom and knowledge. It’s what keeps us intrigued in the plot lines of movies and books. It’s what pushes us to try new activities or travel to different places. It's a key to humankind's success.

Back to School Night is tomorrow, Wednesday, September 18
We are looking forward to seeing you at Back to School Night tomorrow night.  The schedule is as follows:

6:30 – 7:00 pm:

New: Band and Strings Overview on Stage
Special Education Open House in Library
Level II/III Advanced Academics Overview in the STEAM Lab (T-119 outside in quad)
ESOL Overview in the Art Room (503)
PTA Reception in the Cafeteria

7:05 – 7:50 pm: Session I in Classrooms

8:00 – 8:30 pm: Session II in Classrooms

Session 1 is 15 minutes longer to account for principal, PTA president, and School Board member messages.  Session II is a repeat of Session I, without the videos, in order to allow parents with more than one student at WFES to attend sessions with multiple teachers.

Additional parking is available in back of St. Matthew’s Church on Virginia Ave.

Please remember that Back to School Night is not designed for student attendance.

Virginia Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award
At the School Board meeting last week, Ms. Prindle proudly accepted the Virginia Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award on behalf of Wakefield Forest Elementary.  This award is based on criteria and guidelines adopted by the Board of Education; those criteria include achievement in various curriculum content areas as well as meeting/exceeding state assessment goals.

Welcome to our New Parent Liaison
We’d like to welcome Ms. Miriam Pitchford, Wakefield Forest’s new Parent Liaison.  Parent liaisons work in the schools and community to help families get the information and assistance they need to support their children and to ensure their academic success.  They help parents understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices and can also help connect families to resources in the community.  Ms. Pitchford will be at Wakefield Forest on Mondays, from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm.  You may contact her at 703-503-2300 or at mcpitchford@fcps.edu.

Kiss and Ride Reminder
Please remember that there are only two ways to drop your children off in the morning (as car riders): through the Kiss n’ Ride line or by parking and escorting your children to the front door.  Parents who park on the school side of Iva Lane and drop off their children there are creating both a safety and traffic issue, as the children are navigating a busy parking lot on their own and cars coming up Iva Lane have to negotiate their way around the parked car, which can make two-way traffic dangerous.

Drop off time is 8:25 am (8:20 am for Patrols).  No supervision of children is provided before that time.

Hurricane Dorian Aid

All 32 schools in Region 5 of Fairfax County Public Schools are uniting together to support the humanitarian crisis that has occurred in the Bahamas due to Hurricane Dorian. We have all witnessed the devastation from this deadly storm and we want to be able to help. There are an estimated 18,000 children in crisis, and many children have lost everything they own. We are calling each of our communities to action!

Over the next two weeks, we will be fundraising by using a GoFundMe page. The link is below which also includes a link to a video for more information. All proceeds will go to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Our funds will go to water, shelter, food, clothes, backpacks, books, and other school materials.

Please join Region 5 in making a difference. Any amount can be helpful! The fundraiser will run from Wednesday, September 18th to Friday, October 4th.
