From the Principal's Desk

Dear Members of the CHS Community:

What a week! I think the Tech Pathways kick-off event that Chantilly was asked to host on Tuesday was a big success. I was pleased that so many leaders in government, education and the private sector were on hand to recognize the great work happening at CHS, but I was more pleased that so many of our students had a chance to take part in a memorable experience. For example, our JROTC students interacted with leaders and our talented orchestra students had a chance to demonstrate their talent; Mr. Keel’s students had a dialogue with Governor Northam about course content and possible career options; the CHS Robotics team had a chance to show off their work to the Governor and his entourage; the Knightly News team were able to interview the Governor and student volunteers were able to demonstrate their skills to others in our Innovation Lab. I could go on, but the point is that it was great to watch so many of our students showcase their many talents with pride. In other news, I encourage everyone to come to our first home football game tonight. Our 1-0 Chargers look great so far and it promises to be a fun evening. Finally, don’t forget to sign up for the Asha-Jyothi 5k at Fairfax Corner on Sunday. All the money we raise will help support the construction of a shelter for homeless orphans in India (see details below).

Have a good weekend,

Scott

Support ASHA-JYOTHI 5K Run

Last year, Chantilly received a donation from the non-profit, Asha-Jyothi, to fund the Chantilly Innovation Lab, which opened in February, 2019.  Asha-Jyothi sponsors an annual 5K Run/Walk in locations throughout the United States.  The local event will take place on September 15th at Fairfax Corner at 8am.

Participants need to enter the school-specific code included at the bottom of the flyer (chs-aj5k) so Chantilly gets credit for their participation. We plan to donate all money raised to help build an orphanage for homeless children, with a completion date around Spring/Summer 2020.  This fundraising is part of the Youth Leadership group collaboration at Asha-Jyothi. Please see the link for details: https://www.asha-jyothi.org/cause/orphanage-for-a-good-cause/ . We supported this effort last year, and our efforts were greatly appreciated

Recent Student Successes

This is the first installment for the school year of what will become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  I plan to meet with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • Maleha Asmi is immediately lovely. She has a genuine desire to improve herself as a writer. I only knew her a few days before we were deep into analyzing her last years' essays so that she could make them better--just out of her own curiosity and intensity as a learner.   Ms. Julianne Abruzzo
  • Jon Connell has that most wonderful gift of sharing laughter and fun stories when the stress of college application essay writing is just too much. I appreciate his ability to reduce tension and encourage positive thinking in the classroom.  Ms. Deb Wydra
  • Jolie Dennis is attentive and cheerful each and every class. So far she has demonstrated great qualities of listening and sharing thoughts with the class and her group both orally and in writing. She is a joy to have in class. Ms. Mary Kay Downes
  • Saniah Harris wanted to challenge herself with English 10 Honors this year, and she has been creating beautiful work since our first class together. She is focused, kind, an excellent team-player, and an overall wonderful addition to our 4th PD class. I'm proud of you, Saniah!  Ms. Molli Atallah
  • Isabella Hunt has quickly and comfortably immersed herself in our Creative Writing course. She is willing to collaborate and to share her writing with others. I'm so excited to see how she grows this year!  Ms. Nikki Lehman
  • Jacob Lockey demonstrated creative and original thought while rewriting William Stafford's poem "You Reading This, Be Ready." He made sure that "funny" was also "smart" and inspired critical thinking among classmates. Ms. Kimberly Scott
  • Estiben Quino Ruano displayed exemplary effort during our mini-project about heroes. The detail that he provided in his project demonstrated his keen understanding of heroic archetypes. His work ethic and desire to improve is admirable and inspiring.  Mr. Luc Nguyen and Ms. Emily Sullivan
  • Gabriel Ransom is such a wonderful contributor to his speech and debate class. From the very first day of school two years ago, Gabe has approached each assignment with seriousness, enthusiasm, and passion. I appreciate how Gabe listens to a variety of viewpoints and carefully considers all sides of an argument when formulating an opinion on a controversial topic. I have loved watching Gabe grow as a cooperative student, thoughtful listener, and confident speaker.  Ms. Barbara Clougherty
  • Samantha Sudama-Saroop is an enlightened young woman who is always reading for a greater meaning, and takes every opportunity in AP Lang to better her analytical and argumentative skills. Moreover, she is a model for peers in terms of perspective and maturity, and thus she is a joy to have as a student.  Mr. Bobby Nelson
