Canterbury Woods Weekly Happenings

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Families,

I had a sweet interaction with a first grader this morning. She was greeting me for the first time this school year and asked, "You're Dr. L, right?" Once reassured, she explained that she didn't recognize me because I had "grown up a lot." And perhaps I have. I feel so fortunate to be starting my second year as your principal, and welcome your input and partnership in making Canterbury Woods a great place to "grow up" for all of our students, our teachers and our staff.

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig, "Dr. L"

Dismissal Safety Reminders

As we settle into our routines for the school year, I'd like to take a moment make sure that those routines are putting our students' safety first. If you are a Kiss and Ride user, please exercise patience. Remember that our youngest students may still be using a five-point harness and may be learning to fasten it themselves. Please do not jeopardize our students' safety by trying to circumvent the appropriate Kiss and Ride lane procedures. If you are a parent of a student who needs extra time, please pull up to the front position of the Kiss and Ride lane before having your child enter your car. In that position our patrols and staff can provide you a bit more time to ensure your child is safely buckled before pulling away from the curb. Remember that our safety patrols are still kids, and they shouldn't be expected to handle traffic violations or impatient motorists.

If your child is a walker, you may have been accustomed to enjoying the playground before dismissal with your preschool-aged children. However, for the safety of our students, we must implore you to stay off the playground and keep the gate to the playground area closed until all of our students have gone inside. This year, one grade level is at recess until 3:50, and it diminishes our teachers' ability to carefully supervise our students when community members, be they adult or child, are on the playground during school hours.

Thank you for your partnership in our students' safety.

Woodson Feeder Night

The Woodson Activities Department would like to invite you to the Annual Feeder Night Football game on Friday September 20, 2019!

The Friday night football game vs. Oakton will start at 7:00 pm -- students will assemble around 6:30 PM near the scoreboard and run up and down the field before the game.

The Theme is a “HAWAIIAN OUT” (School colors are also encouraged).

Upper Grade Specials

Parents of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders, thank you for communicating your children's preferences for band, strings and chorus. Electives instruction began this week, and we have used this week to make adjustments from day to day as we make sure our classes are balanced and that all students have their required art, music and PE instruction along with supplemental specials or music electives. One point of correction: our new PE teacher is Cortnee Williams, not Collins, as the individualized specials schedules sent home last week indicated.

We will continue to make necessary adjustments, so please continue to provide us feedback if your preferences are not reflected in your child's specials schedule.
