News from the Library

Over the summer, the program that was used to manage our patrons and library materials was switched to a new vendor and changed for the better!  It is very user friendly.  Students can now log in to their own library accounts and renew books, put books on hold, and make a favorites list.   We now also have a large number of ebooks and eAudio books available through our catalog.

Students were shown during library orientation how to use the catalog and log in to their accounts.  Students log in starting from LMS website and clicking on “Library”.  See images for directions to access their accounts below.  It’s imperative for students take the responsibility to return their library materials on time in order for all students to have full and equitable access to our library materials.

As per countywide policy, no late fees will incur for late library materials.  However, students must pay for damaged or lost library materials, and unpaid financial obligations or lost books may not prevent a student from checking out materials or using the library.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the library at 703-988-8196

healthy

Your Health Matters

Last week we talked about  processed foods.  What are processed foods?  Processed foods are usually foods that are frozen, packaged, canned, baked, dried or pasteurized.  Many of these foods have more than your daily recommended allowance of sugar and sodium (salt).  Preservatives, which are chemicals, are added to keep the food safe for consumption, and so the food can be eaten for a longer period of time….giving it a longer expiration date.  Some of these chemicals are used in paint thinner or plant and pest control.  What do you think they are doing to your body?

Do you ever read the labels and ingredients?   Can you read everything on the label or are the ingredients hard to pronounce?  Some of the most popular cereals have been found to have pest and plant killer in them!  Look at this these!  How do they compare?  How many ingredients can you pronounce and recognize?   Whatever ingredient is listed first is normally the higher percentage ingredient.

label

The one on the right!!  Try to read your labels this week to start to learn about how you are fueling your body!!!

This week, we are going to talk about water!    According to the Journal of Biological Chemistry, a human adult body consists of up to 60% water with the brain and heart being composed of 73% water, and the lungs being about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79%, and even the bones are watery at 31%.  So what does this mean??  We need water to survive, feed our bodies and to function well.

The amount that we need varies depending on the person’s unique body, but a good rule of thumb is 64oz of water a day.  Did you know that many people in Japan, drink 2 glasses of water when they first wake up, and they are the only country to have over 50,000 people over the age of 100.

Drinking water, helps you perform better cognitively, physically and in digesting food.

Benefits of drinking water in the morning:

  • Rehydrates your body
  • Flushes out toxins
  • Improves metabolism
  • Increases brain power
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Hydrates your skin
health chart

Your urine is a good sign as to if you are well hydrated.  It will change colors based on how much water you have been drinking.  Take a look at this chart!  You will notice that your urine becomes darker the less water that you have in your body.  It should be noted that some medications and foods can change the color of your urine, so you will want to keep this in mind.  You will find these charts posted in your bathrooms to help you decide and to keep track of how you are doing with your water intake.

We hope you have a healthy week!!
