Mark Your Calendars!

Back to School Night is on Thursday, September 19th at 6:30 p.m.  See here for details:  https://woodsonhs.fcps.edu/event/back-school-night-1

Parents will walk their student's schedule, meet teachers, and learn about curriculum for the upcoming year.

Monthly Parent Seminar - Study Skills

In response to the Family Engagement Survey administered during the 2018-19 School Year, Woodson is focusing on sharing information with parents to help parents improve their child’s learning and to identify and develop social and emotional skills for students to be successful.  In addition, we are looking for ways to maintain two way communication between families and the school.

One way we are engaging families is through monthly Parent Seminars.  In addition to the PTSO meetings (held on the second Tuesday of each month), administrators and counselors will plan and deliver a monthly seminar based on various topics.

September’s Parent Seminar will address Study Skills and will take place on Wednesday, September 25th at 5:30 p.m. in Cafeteria A.

One task that is essential for all students and their success in high school is developing a way to study. Each student has to find their own routine. The parent seminar will feature a few of our wonderful veteran teachers and information about how to help your child find success while studying. More information will be posted on our website with materials posted after the session for those that are not able to attend.

Sports Highlights

Woodson Varsity Field Hockey travelled to Wakefield High School and moments after the first whistle, seniors Anna Stribling and Izzy Gonzales connected for a goal.  Before half-time, Gonzales earned a brace.  Stribling was all over the field disrupting Wakefield’s play.  Junior Katie Williams also earned a brace built on the assistance of Juniors Zoe Hite and Margaret Stephan.  A Stephan’s goal made it five.  Junior Gwyneth Durosko’s goal was the sixth unanswered of the night.  Cavs win, 6-0. The Lady Cavs participated in the South County Labor Day weekend tournament against four other area schools and were 19-1 in goals for and against cumulative for the tournament. Standout performances came from Senior Bridget Cassata, Juniors Allie Maahs, Makayla Mastal, Kiera O’Connor, and Audrey Fisher.

Next the Lady Cavs hosted Herndon.  For the first goal, Durosko attacked and put the ball on target while Williams finished.  The second came off a corner, Gonzales put the ball on target and Hite finished to put Woodson up by two.  Final score, 3-1.

Varsity field hockey travelled to Madison where chances were created, but the Lady Cavs were unable to get it over the line.  Woodson midfield and defense were solid.  Close to the end of regulation time, Senior Rachel Hartzler and Junior Kelley Gross made a goal line save that kept the match scoreless.  Tough play in overtime, but no goal.  In the shootout, Gross minded the sticks and closed down the opposition.  Final Woodson attacker, Cassata, scored the game winner.  Brilliant game.  Woodson wins.

Co-Ed Golf On August 15, the Cavs participated with 25 other schools in the Patriot Invitational at Bristow Manor Golf Club in Bristow, VA.  Senior captain Amelia Noca paced the Cavs with an 85 on a very challenging course.  Junior Minchan Kim posted an 86, Junior captain Ryan Gaugler shot 88, and sophomore Tytan Matthews posted a 94.  The Cavs finished 15th of 26 teams overall and 4th of 6 Patriot District teams.

On August 21, the Cavs opened their head-to-head match schedule by defeating Westfield, 175-207, at the Country Club of Fairfax.  Amelia Noca led the Cavs with a 40, Ryan Gaugler shot 42, Minchan Kim 44, and sophomore Zara Karim shot 49.

The Cavs conclude their regular season next week with a tri-match against Annandale and Yorktown at Jefferson Golf Course, and a makeup match against Fairfax on Wednesday, September 11, at Army-Navy Country Club.
