Daniels Run Down-Family Edition, September 13, 2019

Greetings Families,

This year teachers and parents/guardians will either have a face to face conference or a phone conference by the start of the second quarter (November 6th).  Classroom teachers should be communicating blocks of time that they have available for conferences and parents/guardians will choose to meet face to face or by phone. If you have not set up a date and time for your conference please contact your child’s teacher.

We completed our annual Back to School Night’s last week and we would like to get your feedback so that we can continue to reflect and improve our connection with families.  Please take a moment to complete this short survey  https://forms.gle/XjkMjDfbpKoku2hf9

We started the Positivity Project (P2) this past week with an introduction to the #Other People Matter mindset. #OtherPeopleMatter is the motto, hashtag, and the spirit of the P2 movement.  Dr. Chris Peterson, one of the founders of positive psychology, would begin lectures by stating, “I can sum up positive psychology in just three words – Other People Matter. Period. Anything that builds relationships between and among people is going to make you happy.”  You can learn more about  #OtherPeopleMatter  here .  The rest of September we will focus on the character traits of Curiosity, Teamwork, and Open-Mindedness.

Have a great weekend,

Chris Smith

DRES Principal

Positivity Project

We have so many wonderful learning opportunities at our school. One thing we are excited about is the kick-off of the Positivity Project, which officially begins on Monday. The Positivity Project is an approach used in elementary and middle schools nationwide to teach character strengths to all students. Using the tenets of positive psychology, the project endeavors to combat the rising trend of narcissism in the world and raise the level of empathy. All Daniels Run teachers will be using dedicated class meeting times each week to teach and model 24 character strengths over the course of the year. Strengths include fairness, forgiveness, humility, perspective, love of learning, humor, honesty, and judgment. Each week, all classes in K-6th grades will focus on the same strength (the instruction and examples, of course, will be developmentally appropriate for the age of the students). Please help us promote character at home! This week we begin with our first trait, curiosity!

English for Beginners (Thursday evenings)  6:30-8pm

This course starts at the beginning - with the English alphabet and basic sounds - and focuses on learning phrases, vocabulary and a little grammar to help you at work, with daily life and at school.  You will learn English in a supportive environment and at a slow but steady pace.  Childcare is provided next door.  The fall session begins October 3

English Conversation Practice (Thursday afternoons)  1-3pm

Do you know lots of the grammar rules of English but lack opportunities to converse with native speakers?  This is the class for you!  We hold an informal conversation time each week which focuses on practicing what you already know and learning new idioms and vocabulary.  This is a great place to build confidence, learn by listening/speaking and have some fun along the way.  The fall session begins September 19

Testing Information

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted a universal screener assessment for use with all elementary school students in kindergarten through grade 6. The universal screener assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. Students in kindergarten will receive screening for reading only. Students in grades 1-6 will receive screening for both mathematics and reading.

The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on universal screener results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support. The universal screener reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary students.

The universal screener and any necessary follow-up assessments will be given at the beginning of the school year. Depending on grade level and previous screener performance, students may receive screening again in the winter and/or in the spring. Schools set the specific dates for testing in each class. For the expected dates when your child will test, please contact your child’s teacher.

Additional information, including a short video, about the universal screener in FCPS can be found at this webpage: https://www.fcps.edu/node/33718. If you have further questions about this assessment, please contact your child’s teacher or the school’s test coordinator

Every Day Counts! On Time and On Target!

FCPS is looking forward to a great school year! Regular attendance is essential for students to form positive peer and adult relationships and to learn. In fact, when students miss significant amounts of instructional time, they tend to lose momentum academically.

We do monitor each child’s attendance daily and will contact a parent if a child does not arrive at school or class as expected. Of course, there are times that students may have health or other concerns that may prevent them from being present. Please contact your child’s school by using its attendance telephone line, email, or online form if your child will be absent. This information can be found on each school’s web page.

More information about FCPS’ attendance expectations is available online.
