CWES Weekly Happenings

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Families,

It's September, and that means teaching all students the expectations for the school year: namely, that we can be respectful, responsible, ready to learn and safe. The administrative team is visiting each classroom over the next two weeks to talk about what these terms mean in the context of Student Rights and Responsibilities, and to ensure all students that we are committed to keeping them safe and happy. Be sure to return the signature page of the SR&R booklet to demonstrate to our students the strong partnership between home and school around our expectations for appropriate behavior.

September also brings students many opportunities to learn something new. Students in fourth, fifth and sixth grades will begin instrumental and choral instruction next week, which means they may not be in specials groupings with their homeroom class each day. We will be communicating with you about your child's individual specials schedule next week.

We are so excited to introduce you to our new office staff members, Maryam Panop and Diana Shvets. Both come to us with experience from other FCPS schools, and you can learn a bit more about them below. Please be sure to introduce yourself the next time you visit the office!

Wishing you pumpkin spice and everything nice,

Diane Leipzig (Dr. L)

Lockdown Drill Today

Today, we had our first lockdown drill of the year. The purpose of a lockdown drill is to prepare our students and staff in the event of an intruder in the building. As required by the Code of Virginia, we will have one more lockdown drill before the 20th day of school, and two more later this school year.

safe zone

To prepare for today's drill, teachers taught our students these established procedures.

During a lockdown drill:

  • An announcement is made, and silent blue lights flash to signal to our hearing impaired students and staff that they should initiate lockdown procedures.
  • Students and teachers remain silent in locked classrooms, unobservable from outside with lights off, window blinds closed, and door windows obscured with paper.
  • Students stay in place away from doors and windows, accompanied by a teacher or staff member.
  • Classroom doors are unlocked from the outside by administrators when the drill is concluded.

Our students did a great job staying quiet and following safety procedures.

If you have any questions about safety drills at CWES please feel free to contact the main office at 703-764-5600.

Meet Our New Office Staff

We have two new additions to our front office! As the office assistant, Maryam Panop’s primary role is reception. As the Special Education Administrative Assistant, Diana Shvets’s primary role is providing administrative support to special education processes and staff. They join our two amazing office members, Amy Decatur and Sue Woodfield. As Student Information Assistant, Amy Decatur's primary role is student registration/records. As the Principal’s secretary, Sue Woodfield serves as office manager and finance technician.

Maryam Panop, Office Assistant

Panop

My name is Maryam Panop and I worked as an office assistant at Cameron Elementary school last year. I have been working in FCPS for 11 years. I was born in Egypt and I have three kids. My daughter, the oldest, is a freshman in optometry school in Philly. My oldest son graduated from GMU and is currently applying for medical school. My youngest son is a freshman at GMU studying IT. I like to travel the world, cook and bake. In addition, walking and playing table tennis are my favorite activities to do. I'm so excited to join the Canterbury Woods family with an awesome administration and staff.

Diana Shvets, Special Education Administrative Assistant

Shvets

My name is Diana Shvets and I am a new SPED AA at CWES! I am originally from Russia but I moved to Virginia 20 years ago. I have three amazing kiddos. When I’m not at CW I run a small data analytic company, take yoga classes and learn how to kayak. I love learning new things and getting good at them. I am looking forward to an exciting year at Canterbury Woods ES!

Single Stall Restroom Option

sign

My own sons were sometimes reluctant to use multi-stall restrooms for a variety of reasons. To better meet our students' needs, we now have three single stall restrooms that students can use. They are located outside the cafeteria, upstairs, and by the library.

The student single stall option may be used when students need adult support, when they have physical disabilities or injuries that limit mobility, when they want additional privacy, or when the single stall is more convenient to their location.

Here are the expectations for these single stalls:

  • Staff or other adults in the building are still permitted to use both restrooms.
  • Students should still travel with a buddy to the restroom.
  • The student using the restroom should lock the door to prevent others from entering while in use (it can still be opened with a key from the outside in case of emergency).
  • The partner should remain outside in the hall.
  • There should never be more than one student in the restroom at a time.

CWES Weekend Food Program

food

Canterbury Woods ES is in its second year of the CWES Weekend Food Program. The purpose of this program is to ensure children in our school have sufficient amounts of non-perishable and easy-to-prepare meals during the weekends and holidays. This program hopes to feed each child’s body,  so their minds are ready to learn upon their return to school.

Canterbury Woods has an Amazon Wish list which has been heavily supported by our parents, staff, and PTA. We are grateful for the generosity of our Canterbury Woods ES community! If you would like to contribute non-perishable items or hygiene products, please click the links below to find out what we are hoping to send home with our students on a weekly basis. We welcome you to utilize your local grocery marts or other avenues to donate to our food program.

Go Green!

Join 150 families in going paperless.

Every Tuesday, students bring home a folder with paperwork from the teacher, the school and the PTA....that adds up to a LOT of reams of paper used each year. This year, Canterbury Woods is offering a green option! Starting October 1st, you can access digital copies of Take Home Tuesday flyers through the CWES PTA website, the PTA newsletter, and News You Choose. (Classroom level communications—work, assessments, etc.—will still be sent home each week in the Take Home Tuesday folder.)

Please fill out this form electronically if you want to opt into going paperless for weekly flyers starting October 1. (Only one response per family--electronic or paper--is required).
