Welcome! As you are making the transition back to school, please review the following office procedures to ensure that all students are safe and accounted for each school day and to minimize disruption of classroom instruction time.
Attendance Line (For Absence or Late Arrival)
Absences and late arrivals should be reported by calling the Attendance Line at 703-904-5151 by 9:00 am. You may also use the Online Attendance Form located on the Franklin Middle School website.
Pre-Arranged Absences (3 or more days)
Pre-arranged absences must be approved in advance. Please send written notification to the main office at least one week before the scheduled absence detailing the student name, the dates of absence and the reason for the absence. A pre-arranged absence form will be filled out and reviewed by the student’s counselor and teachers or administrator.
Early Dismissal
To minimize disruptions to the classroom learning environment, please have your student bring a note to the main office detailing the student name, date and time you will pick up your student and the reason for the early dismissal. A pass will be issued to your student to be released from class. Please do not use the attendance line to request early dismissal.
Lunches – Drop Off
If you need to drop off a lunch for your student, please bring it to the main office by 10:15 am. It will be placed on a lunch cart that will be taken to the cafeteria. If you need to drop off a lunch AFTER 10:15 am, please come to the main office with your driver’s license and check into the Visitor Management System and walk the lunch down to the cafeteria.
Forgotten Items – Drop Off Point
If your student has forgotten something at home, you can bring it to the main office and put it in the cabinet labeled “Forgotten Items Drop Off Point.” Students are responsible for coming to the main office on their own to check the cabinet for items they forgot. To reduce the number of classroom interruptions, items will not be delivered to the classrooms (exceptions include items such as glasses, hearings aids, etc.).
Bus Transportation
Students must ride their assigned buses home each day. Riding alternate buses is not permitted. Requests for temporary exceptions to this policy must be submitted in writing at least 10 days in advance to the main office for review by administration.
Clinic
Students should not use their phones to call home if they are not feeling well. They should get a pass from their teacher and report directly to the clinic.

On Tuesday, September 3rd, all Franklin students will be participating in a Students Rights and Responsibilities assemblies during the course of the instructional day. Franklin administrators will be reviewing FCPS policies and school-based procedures to include topics such as responsible use of technology and personal devices, school-appropriate dress code, abstinence from alcohol, tobacco/vaping, and other drugs, identification and reporting of bullying and harassment, and other topics directly related to Franklin’s commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful learning environment. Please be sure your child is in attendance on September 3rd to receive this SR&R overview which will support positive decision-making throughout the school year.
Students will be provided additional learning opportunities by participating in Students Rights and Responsibilities lessons during their Learning Seminar period on September 5, 6, 10, and 11. Parents and guardians are highly encouraged to review the SR&R video and handbook with their children to support them with decision-making at the middle school level. SR&R Parent and/or Guardian Signature Sheets (found in the Falcon Flyover student packet) can be submitted to their child’s Learning Seminar teacher by September 11th. All students will receive a hard copy of the SR&R which will contain an additional copy of the Parent and/or Guardian Signature Sheet.

This year’s Franklin Middle School fundraiser will involve our school’s participation in the 11th Annual Asha-Jyothi 5K and 1K Fun Run taking place at Fairfax Corner on Sunday, September 15th.

Welcome Franklin Falcons to the 2019-2020 school year! I am excited to announce the dates for the Parent Teen Book Club. This program is a great opportunity to communicate with your teenager as he/she moves forward in shaping an identify and in making good choices for the future. Both the parent and teen read the book before the meeting and come ready to discuss the text. There are three separate meetings throughout the course of the school year and five different titles are offered at each meeting. There are also author visits and guest speakers as they relate to a theme associated with a text.
This school year, there will be three meetings. The first meeting will occur on October 3, 2019 and will meet at 7:00 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. Registration will open at 3 p.m. on August 29, 2019 and the QR Code for that meeting is above. The second meeting will occur on January 15, 2020 and the registration will open on November 20, 2019. The third meeting will occur on April 1, 2020 and sign ups will open on February 27, 2020. Welcome Franklin Falcons! Franklin Middle School is excited to welcome writer Ben Mikaelsen, author of Touching Spirit Bear, next spring on April 1, 2020. In preparation for this author visit, part of each student’s school supplies are to purchase a copy of Touching Spirit Bear. When Ben is here in the spring, he will sign personal copies of the students’ books. If you do not purchase a copy, Franklin Middle School will have copies available for students to borrow during the school year. Franklin Middle School prides itself on building literacy for all students and we incorporate ten minutes of reading in fifth period two times per week. Beginning the week of September 23, 2019, students will be reading Touching Spirit Bear. Dear Parents/Guardians,
The FMS After School Program will begin on Monday, September 23rd. We are very excited about our after-school program this year! We have many stimulating and unique opportunities and hope your child will find something that interests them. Please see below for some important information in regards to the After-School Program.
Late Buses: Late buses begin on Monday September 23rd and will be offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and dismiss around 4:45 PM. There are fewer buses and runs, the stop may be different from the normal morning or afternoon stop.
Clubs/Activities: The first list of activities will be posted on the FMS website, your child’s grade level google classroom and sent out through News You Choose. This list will constantly be updated throughout the year with changes and additions. Please check back often to make sure you are viewing the most recent version. In order to participate, your child must turn in an After-School registration form.
Attendance: Attendance is taken each day after school for all activities. If your child is absent from school, they are not permitted to return to participate in the after-school program that day.
Pick-Up: If you are picking your child up, please utilize the Kiss and Ride area. You do not need to check your child out through the main office. If you are picking them up prior to the conclusion of their activity, please pre-arrange this with them so they know to meet you in the Kiss and Ride area. We do encourage students to stay through to the end of their activity, please avoid early pick up when possible. If you choose to pick your child up instead of them taking a late bus, please arrive promptly at the conclusion of their activity to prevent unnecessary wait time by students or staff.
Miscellaneous:
- Be sure to discuss your child’s after-school plan with them every day to avoid any confusion in the afternoon.
- Due to the number of students staying after each day, it’s extremely difficult to deliver phone messages to students. Please communicate with your child ahead of time to avoid any potential problems.
- All FCPS and FMS school rules apply during the after-school program. Please remind your child to adhere to this.
Encourage your child to be an active part of the after-school program. Research has shown that there are many benefits to participating and here are just a few…

AAP Level IV services are available to students in grades 3-8. Students may be found eligible for full-time placement in AAP Level IV Center classes through a central selection process and receive a highly challenging instructional program in science, social studies and English. Multiple criteria are reviewed by a central selection committee to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. More information about AAP services available at the middle school level may be found on the FCPS public website at: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/advanced-academics. Parents or guardians of seventh grade students, who are new to Fairfax County Public Schools since January 2019, may initiate the full-time AAP Level IV screening process by completing and submitting an Advanced Academic Programs Level IV Referral Form to Lea Fadden at Lea.Fadden@fcps.edu no later than October 7, 2019. No late referrals will be accepted.
Seventh grade students who are not new to FCPS may apply in the winter for AAP entry in eighth grade. Those referrals are due January 6, 2020.
