Jackson Journal 9.6.19

Message from Principal Magliola

Dear Jackson Families,

As I have visited classrooms during instructional periods this week, I have been greatly encouraged and inspired by seeing our students fully engaged in their learning. "The Jackson Experience" is so meaningful for our students and is the core of our school culture and vision. I am very proud of the continued preparation and thoughtful planning from our teachers and have seen it lead to our students being genuinely excited for the material they will learn, as well as the community they will build here at Jackson. It is in these relationships with their teachers and each other that our students will discover more about themselves as members of a larger community.

Please continue reading below for important information and updates. We look forward to seeing you at Back To School Night on September 10th @ 7:00 pm

Sincerely,

Michael Magliola, Principal

Message from LJMS PTA

Our first general PTA Meeting will be held at Back to School Night and will begin @ 5:30 pm. Did you know you can support school activities by joining the PTA?  The PTA helps fund student planners, field trips, school clubs, teacher appreciation, and more. Also, the main PTA fundraiser is an armchair fundraiser (no selling door to door!) and you can donate online too! Check out the new PTA website at https://ljmspta.org. You can join the PTA online. More details to follow

AVID Grams on Back to School Night

Luther Jackson’s AVID program will be holding a fundraiser during our Back to School Night, September 10 at 5:30 pm in the front lobby. For only $1, you can purchase an AVID Gram that will help put a smile on your child’s face. With each AVID Gram you will have the opportunity to write an encouraging message to your student, which will be hand delivered with a pencil and a piece of candy. All proceeds will benefit the AVID program, which helps to provide students with opportunities to visit local universities and prepare for global readiness.

Book Fair is coming!

This is an opportunity to put books in your students’ hands and support the library at the same time. All proceeds from the Book Fair will benefit Luther Jackson’s school library. The Book Fair will be held in the library during school hours from Monday, September 9th through Friday, September 13th. The Book Fair will also be open during Back to School Night on Tuesday, September 10th from 5:30 PM-8 PM.  Prefer to shop online? No problem! Visit Jackson’s online Book Fair. Books will be delivered to the school and we will get them to your students. Please contact the librarians if you have any questions.

Family Life Education (FLE) Preview on BTSN

Hello Jackson Parents,

In November, students in 7th & 8th grade will be starting our Health lessons through their H&PE class. Below, you will find some important dates and links that will help guide you as you make decisions about whether or not to opt-out your child from all/some/none of the Family Life Education (FLE) lessons. Below is a more detailed calendar of when these lessons will be taught.

Please read through the FLE material on your FCPS 24/7 ParentVUE account. There, if you choose to opt your student out of any lessons, you can download and fill out the appropriate form. The same form was also included in your Welcome Packet. Please return the completed form to the office of Student Services as soon as possible for our planning purposes, but no later than November 7th. The FLE lessons and presentations in our Human Growth & Development(HGD) and the Emotional & Social Health(ESH) units are all accessible through ParentVUE on FCPS 24/7.

There is also a FLE Parent Preview night happening on Sept. 10 in the MPR. This is an opportunity to look through the material and ask questions with the PE Department. We will give you general information and help guide you to the material online.

Human Growth & Development(HGD): Nov 12-15

Forms:

https://www.fcps.edu/node/31710   This form only needs to be completed if you are choosing to opt-out your child from any/all of the HGD or ESH lessons.

If you have already turned in an Opt-Out form, there is no need to do so again. If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact your students’ PE teacher, preferably through email as we are rarely near a phone. We look forward to working with you to help your student live a healthier life.

Thank you,

LJMS H&PE Department
