Practice Safety Drills

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The safety and welfare of our students and staff are our highest priority at Herndon Middle School.  Because of this, we routinely practice safety drills throughout the year to ensure our students and staff are aware of the procedures during an emergency situation.  On Thursday September 5th, we will be practicing a lock-down drill.  FCPS requires that we practice four lockdown drills throughout the year, two of them being in the first twenty days of school.

In addition to lockdown drills, we will practice one fire drill a week for the first month of school and one fire drill a month during the rest of the year.  A bus evacuation drill will be held in the Fall and Spring.  A tornado drill will be held during the month of March.

We ask that you take this opportunity to speak with your child regarding the need to take all drills seriously and the importance of staying calm in an emergency situation.  Students will be instructed by staff members as to what the proper procedures are during each type of drill.  Should you have questions about any of these drills or wish to learn more about them, please contact the school directly.

Sincerely,

Herndon Middle School Administrative Team

Positivity Project

unity time

Each Even Day, our students will begin the day in Unity Time.  The focus during this time is around our P2 (Positivity Project) lessons and literacy.  The Positivity Project is a pyramid wide initiative which focuses on helping our students and staff identify strengths in character and develop traits that encourage positive relationships.  You can learn more here.  (Spanish Link)This year, during Unity Time, our schoolwide literacy focus will involve book discussions.  There are six books that will be read aloud by teachers during Unity Time. The read aloud time will also allow students to discuss themes in the books that are related to the positive character traits they learn about in the P2 lessons.  A brief description of this years books can be found here. For any parent or guardian who would like to opt out their student from participating in a particular book reading and discussion, contact your child’s counselor or their Unity Time teacher (listed as period 8 on the schedule). General questions can be directed to any of our administrators at Herndon Middle School.

New for 2019: FCPS Now Using the Here Comes the Bus Mobile App

To help you know when your child’s bus is approaching your stop, FCPS is now using the Here Comes the Bus mobile app, starting on August 26. Here Comes the Bus is a free school bus tracking app that can simplify morning and afternoon routines for parents and students by giving real-time bus location and text or email notification alerts, helping everybody get to the bus stop on time.

Here Comes the Bus® uses FCPS global positioning system (GPS) data and an easy-to-use customizable map that works on one or multiple devices, such as a tablet, smartphone, or desktop computer.

Parents can download the app now for free from the App Store or Google Play. You will need the FCPS school district code 28982 and a Student Information System (SIS) Parent Account (contact your child's school if you do not have an SIS Parent Account). Once signed in, you can customize or edit features, including how the app will communicate with you, and the size and location of the notification radius around your child's bus stop.

Learn more about the Here Comes the Bus mobile app.
