West Springfield Elementary - Back to School Welcome

Note from Dr. Sheers

Dear West Springfield Families,

At Back to School Night (BTSN) this Thursday, you will be learning about your child’s teacher and grade level curriculum. We look forward to seeing you!

This year, we will continue to focus on our school’s vision by preparing our students for the future. Developing students’ creative thinking skills, building positive relationships, and supporting a caring culture will allow us to help each child reach his or her full potential. We will be working collaboratively to provide our students many unique learning opportunities including access to our STEAM lab, Level IV curriculum in all grades, authentic learning through problem-based learning projects, in addition to our annual school-wide field trip in the Spring!

The West Springfield staff plans to focus on developing students' Portrait of Graduate (PoG) skills. Teachers will be creating learning opportunities that allow students to apply the attributes of a Communicator, Collaborator, Ethical and Global Citizen, Creative and Critical Thinker, and Goal-Directed and Resilient Individual. Developing Portrait of a Graduate (PoG) attributes is a high priority for FCPS and West Springfield ES as these skills are necessary for all children to succeed in our rapidly changing, increasingly diverse, and interconnected world.

We are proud to share that West Springfield Elementary was 1 of 270 schools in Virginia to earn the 2019 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards for advanced student learning and achievement. The VIP program recognizes schools and divisions that exceed state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by the Governor and the Board of Education.  Our students and teachers have worked hard over the last school year and are honored to receive this recognition!

Finally, another area we are focusing on is family engagement, specifically, respecting our parents by honoring the rights, dignity and worth of every person and developing a culturally responsive school community in and out of the classroom. You’ll be hearing more about our efforts throughout the year and we invite you to engage in this work.

We are excited for the upcoming school year and look forward to partnering with you and the PTA to support our goals and school vision. We are stronger together!

Sincerely,

Dr. Kelly Sheers, Principal

Satonya Dews, Assistant Principal
