Day 7!  We are off to a smooth beginning of the school year.

Please call the Sangster Attendance Line at 703-644-8282 to notify the school if your child is going to be absent or tardy.  The instructional day begins at 9:10 AM.  FCPS School Board regulations require verification of school absence.  Thank you for your assistance.

Free and Reduced Meals:  The Free and Reduced Meals Application is now online.  Families must re-apply every year to receive this service.  More information and a link to the application can be found at: https://www.myschoolapps.com/Application    If families do not re-apply their number will be inactivated in early October.

Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)

Booklets were sent home last week in Thursday folders.  The SR&R lays out the rules and expectations for students in Fairfax County Public Schools. Please take time to read and review the material in the SR&R with your child. Ms. Reddel met with all grade levels last week to review this information as well.  Please sign and return the signature page inside the front cover. The page specifies a return date of October 25th. We ask that you return the signature page by September 9th. We believe the sooner families and students read and understand their rights and responsibilities, the more successful they will be in school.

Lockdown Drills

In order to meet the requirements of the Amended Code of Virginia 22.1-137.2, lockdown drills must be conducted at least four times each school year.  On Friday, September 13, at 2:45 p.m. our students and staff will take part in the first of the four annual lockdown drills for this school year.  A real lockdown procedure is initiated in the rare event a high-risk incident (involving weapons, stranger intrusion, etc.) occurs in the school, on school property or in the vicinity of the school that could endanger the safety of the students and staff. Future lockdown drills will be unannounced.

A lockdown requires that all students and staff remain in classrooms or other designated secure locations that are away from danger and that minimize access and visibility.  During the drill, signs will be posted on the entrance doors indicating the school is in lockdown.  No one will be allowed into the school at this time.  Similar procedures would be followed in a real situation.  Please take this into consideration if your child has an appointment scheduled for Friday afternoon on September 13.  The safety of our students and staff is a top priority, and the drill will help ensure that we are able to successfully manage crisis situations at the school.  Please note that this drill is for practice purposes only.

Early Pick Up

If you are picking your child up from school before the end of the school day, please arrive in the main office by 3:30 PM.  It’s a busy time of day both in the classrooms and the main office.  Thanks for your assistance.

Birthday Treats

Parents may send special snacks to school to celebrate their child’s birthday with class members.  Please be aware of food allergies in your child’s classroom.  Please keep the following in mind:

  • Deliver the birthday treats to the main office, not the classroom.
  • Snacks should be small items that are individually packaged and prearranged with the teacher.
  • Please bring healthy snacks.
  • Glass containers should not to be used.

Parking in the Neighborhood

If you need to park in the neighborhood, please be kind to our school neighbors, park legally and do not block their private mailboxes and driveways.  Thank you.

Spirit Days Every Friday

Every Friday this school year is a “Sangster Spirit Day.”  Wear your school colors or school spirit wear to show your Sangster Pride.  Our school colors are blue and gold.

Positivity Project - Week of September 9

This week students will continue to learn about the Other People Matter Mindset, which is the Positivity Project motto. This way of thinking includes knowing that your words and actions affect others, cheering others’ successes, being present and giving others attention, supporting others when they struggle, and identifying and appreciating the good in others. Find out more about this mindset by watching this video by Positivity Project co-founder Mike Erwin.
