A message from the

Fairview Elementary PTA

Welcome to Fairview!  Your PTA is looking forward to seeing, hearing, and connecting with our new and returning families and staff.  We will kick off our fall membership drive and open the store.  We will communicate with parents via email, Facebook, the PTA bulletin board in the front of the school, and occasionally on paper.  If you didn't already know, Virginia law mandates that schools cannot share parent contact information with PTAs until September 30.  When we receive the list and have the information loaded in to our system, you will have the opportunity to modify your preferences for the PTA communications and directory.  Until then, the administration has generously agreed to share information on our behalf.

Below are a couple of things you need to know!  Please take a look and reach out with questions.  We look forward to seeing, hearing, and connecting with everyone at Back to School Night and beyond!

Your PTA officers

Lee Mayfield, Roy Chiquitucto, Robyn Ridpath, Nina Askvig, & Jenny Hemick

Welcome back luncheon for staff.  The PTA hosts an annual back-to-school luncheon for staff.  This year it will be on THURSDAY, 8/29 during student lunch periods.  Since many teachers eat lunch with their students the first week or so, they can swing by the teachers' lounge and pick up a fresh, healthy salad to help them refuel and tolerate our children all day.  If you are able to donate some items or your time for this event, please use the signup below!

Caffeination Nation!  The PTA supplies K-cups for the Keurigs in the Teacher's Lounge.  Staff really appreciate having a quick source for caffeine during the day.  If you'd like to contribute some Kcups, here's the SUG!   https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b4dafa92da46-fairview1

MySchoolAnywhere is now Member Toolkit!

The membership database/directory service we use has merged with Member Toolkit.  Converting our records and setting up the new system will take us a little bit of time, so please be patient.  You'll be able to officially join the PTA for the 2019-2020 school year very soon!

Coming soon...spirit wear shop...$100 Amazon Gift Card membership promotion...new community partners...special events...how to join the coolest volunteer squad in town...and more!

In September, be sure to mark your calendar for:

- 9/10:  Back to School Night

- 9/27:  PTA Family Fun Night:  May the 27th Be With You (rescheduled from May 2019!)

Student Birthday Recognition

At Fairview Elementary, we work hard to ensure that students’ minds and bodies are ready for learning each day.  In addition to the hard work our teachers and staff do every day to prepare students for success in the classroom, we can also work to encourage healthy eating and physical activity, leading them to lifelong success.  By helping them start healthy habits early in life, we can help reduce our children’s health risks and increase their chances for longer, more productive lives.  Student health, wellness and safety is our top priority.  Celebrations are very important and we are committed to recognizing students in healthy and safe ways on their special day.

Like many other schools, we have quite a few students who suffer from life-threatening allergies.  According to the Centers for Disease Control (2011), allergies have increased more than 20% among American children since the mid-1990s.  As a school community, we must do all we can to lessen the chances of an allergic incident happening and must work diligently to keep our students safe.

There is also a growing concern for wellness in our children.  Childhood obesity has tripled over the past 20 years.  Using food, even healthy food, as a reward undermines nutrition education and teaches children to eat when they aren’t hungry as a reward to themselves.  Additionally, we have concern for families whose budget does not allow them to purchase treats or items for an entire class.

Based on feedback and in collaboration with the Robinson Pyramid elementary schools, we have determined that during the school day, we will celebrate student birthdays with non-edible treats beginning this school year.  Cupcakes, candy, and/or any other edible food items will not be allowed.  We also strongly encourage healthy lunches.

Our teachers are committed to recognizing your students’ special days. Student birthdays will continue to be shared via the morning news show, and students may select a new book courtesy of the Fairview PTA. We encourage families that wish to celebrate a birthday to consider recognition in this way:

  • Visit the classroom as a guest reader or share a special talent or interest with the class
  • Give a classroom gift in honor of your child to be enjoyed by all such as books, indoor games, recess equipment
  • Donate a book to the school library in your child’s honor
  • Donate a plant to beautify the school

As educators, caregivers and loved ones, we all want the best for our students.  Thank you for joining us in giving students healthy opportunities to celebrate their special day.  We appreciate your support in ensuring the well-being of all our students and the importance of instilling healthy eating habits.
