MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL-Back to School Information

Senior Parent Night

On Thursday, August 29, the Student Services counseling staff will be hosting another information session regarding post-secondary planning for your seniors. The counselors will discuss the 2 and 4 year college admissions process and other post-secondary options. This event will take place at Westfield High School on August 29th before Back to School Night begins from 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. in the Auditorium. This presentation is geared for parents of seniors. The school counselors will meet in person with each senior during the first few weeks of school to provide information and support for their post-secondary planning.

Back to School Night

Back-to-School Night will be held on Thursday, August 29 and begin promptly at 7:00 p.m.  Please download or copy your student’s schedule from SIS ParentVue. New families to FCPS will receive a SIS ParentVue activation letter with set up instructions from FCPS. Upon arrival at the school, please report to your student’s first period class.  The purpose of Back-to-School Night is for you to meet your student’s teachers, see their classroom, and receive a brief overview of each of their classes.  The night is not intended for private conferences or lengthy conversations with teachers about your student.  If you would like to have more dialog with an individual teacher, please contact the teacher directly via email or phone.

School Closed August 30-September 2 for Labor Day Break

New Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. As a result, Friday, August 30 is a holiday for students, in addition to the Labor Day holiday.

New for 2019: FCPS Now Using the Here Comes the Bus Mobile App

To help you know when your child’s bus is approaching your stop, FCPS is now using the Here Comes the Bus mobile app, starting on August 26. Here Comes the Bus is a free school bus tracking app that can simplify morning and afternoon routines for parents and students by giving real-time bus location and text or email notification alerts, helping everybody get to the bus stop on time.

Here Comes the Bus® uses FCPS global positioning system (GPS) data and an easy-to-use customizable map that works on one or multiple devices, such as a tablet, smartphone, or desktop computer.

Parents can download the app now for free from the App Store or Google Play. You will need the FCPS school district code 28982 and a Student Information System (SIS) Parent Account (contact your child's school if you do not have an SIS Parent Account). Once signed in, you can customize or edit features, including how the app will communicate with you, and the size and location of the notification radius around your child's bus stop.

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, non-punitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available to parents on the Westfield High School homepage “Important Beginning of the Year Information”.  Opt out forms and additional information is also available on the FCPS website:  https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education , Middle School (7-8) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/family-life-education-fle, and High School (9-12) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/high-school-academics-9-12/family-life-education-fle. if you wish to opt your child out, please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View https://fcps.blackboard.com/.  Account information is available at your local school or online at http://www.fcps.edu/is/instructionaltechnology/247help/parents.shtml.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.
