Orange Hunt News We HOOT

We had a great first day of school yesterday! There was a lot of energy in our building!  We are so happy to have students back.  We look forward to a wonderful 2019-2020 school year together.

Thank you, Thank You, Thank You!!!

We are so thankful for the teamwork between families and staff as we have opened this school year.  We continue to adjust things as we settle into the 2019-2020 school year!  Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and teamwork!  Remember, if you  have questions please reach out and let us know.

Playground Closed to Public During School Hours

We are happy to share our outdoor spaces like the playground and fields when school is not in session.  We have classes using outdoor spaces and playground throughout our day.  For safety and access, the playground is not available until dismissal after 3:30 pm each day.  Per Regulation 8420.11, parents and non-students are not permitted to use the playground, fields, and blacktop until after 3:30 pm. Our enrolled students have recess and PE up until that time.

At dismissal, if you are wanting to wait for your child, it is important to wait behind the fence or on the space with the single tree near the parking lot.  It is important that you access the areas without interrupting the play of students.  Thank you for your help in keeping students safe.

Transportation

Please know that in the first weeks of school transportation keeps track of the number of students riding the bus to determine our needs for the remainder of the year. If you have any questions or concerns please contact transportation at 703-446-2050.

What do we focus on in the first few weeks?

  • Creating a classroom community. Each morning begins with a Morning Meeting/ Positivity Project where students learn about the character traits and share in an activity or discussion.
  • Learning routines and procedures. The more students can transition quickly and be independent with things like getting materials, the more time there is for learning. Teachers take the time at the beginning of the year to teach routines so that all students understand what is expected of them.
  • Being safe. We have a fire drill each week for the first 4 weeks and 2 lockdown drill. Safety is always our number one priority, even over academics. We practice how to respond quickly, quietly and safely.
  • Assessing students. In order to best instruct our students, we need to know how they learn. We have a variety of assessments to see how students approach different math problems and how they read. This year, all students in FCPS will take an assessment called iReady during week September. It's a short assessment on the computer that gives teachers information about reading and math skills.

Add to our Positivity Patch

Last year, Girl Scout Troop 2406 installed the Positivity Patch to our entrance at door 8. A HUGE thank you to Girl Scout Troop 32 for adding to this patch this year.

If you are looking for a rainy day activity, consider making a rock to add to our patch.  Think back to the Positivity Project and see what inspiration you can create.
