Justice Newsletter - August 25, 2019

“Education breeds confidence; confidence breeds hope; hope breeds peace.” ~ Confucius

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

Welcome to the 2019-20 school year!  I hope you found your summer to be relaxing, reenergizing and enjoyable.

The beginning of a new school year always has a sense of excitement.  It is a time that marks a fresh start, exciting possibilities, and great promise. For our students, it means reconnecting with old friends, meeting new friends and teachers, new learning, discovery, and growth.  We look forward to working with you as we prepare your children for secondary education and the world.

On Monday, students should report to their first period class. If your student doesn't have access to their online schedule, there will be lots of staff to assist them in getting to the right place. All students will receive a paper copy of their schedule in first period.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me, your student's counselor or their administrator. Our door is always open.

Wishing all our families a wonderful school year!

Kiss & Ride

The safety and security of our students and staff is a priority at Justice High School.  This includes the drop-off and pick up of students before and after the school day.  In the continuing effort to maintain and enhance our safe and secure environment, there is a safe and efficient designated Student Drop-off and Pick-up location for your use.  This location is in the rear of the school near the football stadium. It can be accessed by the rear driveway entrance from Peace Valley Lane, between Diamond Dr. and Cheryl Dr. This area is marked by signs indicating “Student Drop-off”. Students can be dropped off beginning at 7:50am. The picture below demonstrates the drop-off area.

Attendance Procedures

Students form important habits early, as they begin to develop responsibility to come to school on time and be prepared and ready to learn. Parents or guardians need to encourage good habits like sleep and eating and study habits so that students are ready to learn. Teachers, administrators, counselors, and other support professionals can help students adjust to routines, learn expectations, and develop academic and social competence.

Virginia requires that all children between the ages of five and eighteen be enrolled in school and attend on a daily basis.  A student who is absent from school for 15 consecutive days or more is withdrawn from school and must officially register again upon his or her return to school.

Parents or guardians should call the attendance line @ (703) 824-3920 before 8:15 AM, to let us know of any tardiness or absence. FCPS will communicate quickly with parents or guardians when a student does not come to school as expected. Parents should receive calls and emails within 30 minutes via an automated attendance calling system. Attendance will be checked daily for period and all-day absences and calls and emails are made at 10 a.m. In addition, attendance is reconciled at 4 p.m. Calls and emails follow at 7 p.m. via an automated attendance system. For more information, please go to our attendance page on the Justice High School Website.

Family Life Education

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education , Middle School (7-8) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/family-life-education-fle, and High School (9-12) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/high-school-academics-9-12/family-life-education-fle. Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View https://fcps.blackboard.com/. Account information is available at your local school or online at http://www.fcps.edu/is/instructionaltechnology/247help/parents.shtml. Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media). Free and Reduce Lunch Application

Free and reduced-price meal applications may be completed online or by submitting a handwritten, paper application for the 2019-2020 school year.  Both the online application and paper application include a designated section with a consent to share information for potential waiver of fees for other programs. This allows parents/guardians to complete the free and reduced-price meal application and provide consent to share information in the same document. Paper applications are available in the Student Services office. For more information visit the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage.

Want to know what’s for lunch? Check out the menu for your child’s school online.

My School Bucks Account

Parents can use this online payment system to check balances and add money to school cafeteria accounts, to make payments to the school for various school related items and to receive low account balance notifications
