Upcoming Events at Kilmer MS

Dear Kilmer Community,

 

I hope that these summer months are providing time for rest and reflection for your family. We have been very busy this summer hiring dynamic new teachers, registering new students, creating student schedules, and planning for the 2019-2020 school year.

I am inviting each of you to attend our upcoming open house afternoons. During our seventh and eighth grade open houses, students will receive their class schedules and locker assignments. Parents will also receive a packet of FCPS information, including bus schedules, when they pick up their child’s schedule. In addition, families will have the opportunity to join the PTA, practice opening the assigned locker and add supplies, locate classrooms, and add money to lunch accounts. PE uniforms will be sold the first week of school. Please bring cash or check made out to Kilmer Middle School. The cost of the uniform is $10 ($6 for the shorts and $4 for the shirt). Online ordering for PE uniforms is now closed.

Below are the dates for each open house by grade level: 

8th grade Open House is Tuesday, August 20th, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

7th grade Open House is Thursday, August 22nd, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

 

The following TWO forms are required to be completed in order to receive a class schedule and locker assignment at the open house.

If you are unable to attend the open houses, class schedules and locker assignments will be available for pick-up on Friday, August 23rd from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The building will not be accessible to tour during this time. Students who are unable to pick up their schedules prior to the first day can also log on to SIS StudentVUE to view their schedule. Schedules will be available on SIS StudentVUE and SIS ParentVUE beginning August 22nd. Schedules will also be available for pick up in the group instruction room the morning of August 26th.

August 26th is the first day of school. Classes start at 7:30 a.m. and end at 2:15 p.m.   Students should come prepared with the supplies listed on the Kilmer website. Students may be asked to purchase additional supplies based on their individual teacher requirements. All students will receive an agenda book during the first week of school, which includes Kilmer’s policies and expectations, with helpful tips on organization, time management, and communication between home and school.

 

Back-to-School Night is Thursday, September 19th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. On this night, parents will have an opportunity to meet their child’s teachers, school counselor, and administrators, as well as learn about classroom policies and the curriculum their child will be studying in each class.

 

Student Information System (SIS) Parent Account

SIS Parent Accounts provide access to view your child’s student information, including attendance, report cards, class schedules, gradebook, course history, discipline, health, and school information, establishing another form of communication between home and school. If you had an active account from the 2018-2019 school year, you can continue to use this account for the 2019-2020 school year.

Parents who have recently registered their child at Kilmer Middle School will receive a letter in the mail in mid-august with an activation key and login information to create a SIS Parent Account. For additional assistance in setting up SIS Parent Accounts, please refer to the following links:

Welcome!  Welcome to all new and returning Kilmer families!  The PTA is looking forward to meeting many of you at our 7th and 8th Grade Open Houses in a few weeks.  Please take a minute or two to drop by and say hello and introduce yourself to our new board members, sign up on site for PTA membership, and perhaps most importantly (to your student anyway!) bring your checkbook or cash to purchase any needed locker accessories like shelves, mirrors, and other Kilmer gear.

 

PTA Membership.  There is, as always, a lot going on behind the scenes as we prepare for the start of the new school year.  We encourage you to take care now of signing up for your Kilmer PTA Membership, before the onslaught of back to school paperwork hits in full force!  It’s easy – Visit www.pay4schoolstuff.com and if you already have an account, simply update your student’s information and add membership and donations to your cart.  If you are new to Kilmer, creating an account and joining the PTA will take less than 5 minutes.  If you have any problems or questions, feel free to reach out (kilmerpta@gmail.com) and we will be more than happy to help.

 

Back to School Teacher Events.  The PTA will hit the ground running by hosting welcome back events for our wonderful teachers on August 19th and 22nd.  If you are able to help out, please email us at kilmerpta@gmail.comor check out the sign up on our website if you are able to donate items for our events.

 

Getting News from the PTA.  The PTA communicates with Kilmer parents primarily through a weekly newsletter, our website, and our Facebook page.  Most returning families should already be set up to receive the newsletter.  If you are new to Kilmer, it can take several weeks for the PTA to get updated contact info from the school, but you can email us at kilmerpta@gmail.comnow and be added right away so as not to miss out on any news!  You can also visit us at www.kilmerpta.org and follow us on Facebook to stay up on all the latest info.

 

School Store.  Our school store will be selling needed locker and classroom items at both Open Houses, and will be open every day for the first two weeks of school to sell binders, notebooks, pencil cases, or whatever else your child may need for the classroom, and much more.  Visit the School Store tab on the website for more details about items for sale and pricing info.  We also open the School Store twice a week (during the four lunch blocks) during the school year, and staff the Store with parent volunteers.  It’s a great way to come in to see the school in action during the day, and to meet more of the Kilmer community.  Be on the lookout for a volunteer sign up in our upcoming newsletter and on our website.

 

First PTA Meeting.  Our first general PTA meeting will take place on Thursday September 12th at 9:30 AM.  We hope to see both lots of new and familiar faces there!
