Back to School Information

Tomorrow, families will receive an email that will provide a link to our Back to School Information hyperdoc.  This virtual document will include all pertinent information so students and families feel prepared for the start of school.  You will also be able to locate all of this information on the Oakton website.  We have been working hard over the summer and cannot wait to welcome all of our students back for the 2019-2020 school year!

FCPSOn - Laptop Distribution

Starting with the 2019 - 2020 school year, FCPS will offer every student access to a computer.  As part of our initiative to provide equitable access to relevant and enriching activities, Oakton will be leveraging these devices to prepare students with 21st century skills.  Laptops will be distributed during Advisory (Period 3) on the first two days of school. Please visit our FCPSOn at Oakton website for more information.

General Information

My SchoolBucks

The initial loading of fees has been put into My SchoolBucks for the 2019-2020 school year.  Some fees that you can currently pay using this system include Class of 2020 senior dues, and Marching Band/Concert Band fees.  In August, we will load all other class fees that are associated with some of our elective courses.

Student Schedules

All students and parents will be able to see class schedules on Thursday August 22 at 6:00 am.  Please be sure you have your ParentVue/StudentVue account set-up.  If you do not currently have an account, you can visit this site to create one.

If you need assistance, please contact the Student Services Office at 703-319-2810.

All-School Summer Reading Experience

Reading is not just about the text you read, but also about the experience of reading. Reading can be a solo activity or something you do with friends. You can read for yourself or you can read to others. Reading can help you to understand new ideas and to create new things.

Oakton High School’s 2019 All-School Summer Reading Experience asks you to take note of the experience of reading. As you read your summer away, keep track of your reading experiences using this BINGO card. To mark a completed experience, please have a witness sign the square. For example, if you read to a resident at a nursing home, you should have the resident or a supervisor sign your card. You may not have the same person sign more than three squares, so take the opportunity to share your experiences with many different people.

Students will be encouraged to hand in their cards to their advisory teacher in August and there will be awards for students who complete BINGO. There are no limits to what you can read. Challenge yourself and read something new, or re-read an old favorite.

Document your reading experiences on Instagram and Twitter throughout the summer with the hashtag #OaktonReads.

Summer Assignments

Our AP Summer Assignments are now available on the Oakton website.  If a class is not listed on that page, it does not have a summer assignment.  Many of our assignments are optional and meant to help prepare students for the year to come.  All assignments that are graded, will not be due until the second week of school to give students time when they return to school to complete the task.

Save-the-Dates

We are excited about our programs to kickoff the 2019-2020 school year.  Please see the links below for  New Student Orientation and Cougar Kick-off.

Back-to-School Open House, September 5

This year we will be switching the model we use for Back-to-School Night.  Based on parent and staff feedback, we found that the model that had been in use has not been highly effective.  We will have an open-house style Back-to-School Night on Thursday September 5 from 4:00-7:00pm.  Parents will be able to come at the time that best meets their schedule as we will not have designated times for each period to meet.  More information on Back-to-School Night will be forthcoming.

Senior Parking Applications 2019-2020

We are currently accepting parking applications for all rising seniors.  Similar to last year we will be following a lottery system.  The final number of parking spaces for students will be determined over the summer once renovation plans for the following school year have been solidified.  Rising seniors who are interested can turn their application into the main office anytime between now and Friday August 16.  Students will be notified at Cougar Kickoff if they will have a parking spot.  Applications can be picked up in the Main Office, or can be found on our website.
