OUR NEW MURAL AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS TO THE LIBRARY!

Dear Fairfax Family,

Does the first Friday of August mean that school is around the corner?  As I check my social media feed, I see that my hometown started school yesterday.  School ends there  just before Memorial Day though, so it is all relevant.  I know our students still have a lot of summer left in them, though.

I have a few important announcements to share with our community, and they begin with two goodbyes.  I’d like to extend a heartfelt farewell on behalf of everyone to Brian Olmes and Catherine Stone, two of Fairfax’s assistant principals.  Mr. Olmes is moving to Boise, Idaho, where he is assuming a principalship one mile from the state’s capitol building.  He will be closer to family, and we all wish him the very best in the City of Trees.   Mrs. Stone is heading a few miles down the road to serve as an assistant principal at  Mountain View High School.  We know that she will continue her passion working with Mountain View’s students (some of whom are ours) and contributing to FCPS’s larger mission.  We are very proud of and for her.  I do hope to announce our two newest assistant principals in the coming weeks.

Yesterday, I worked with the current administrative team to begin planning for the start of the school year.  I have important dates for you below, and with FCPSOn, a brand-new hardwood floor in our field house, summer school here all summer, the first Rebels Assemble (rising freshmen camp), and an early Back to School Night, there is much anticipation and many, many variables in the opening-school equation.  We hope to NOT miss a beat.  I plan to have my Twitter presence up and more active on Monday.  Social media, I know, is communication’s future, but I struggle since I really love to be present and in the moment, and not looking at the moment through my phone.  It seems like a third arm to our students though, so I am going to work extra hard to get with the times.

For your planning, here are a few important dates:

    • Tax free weekend is THIS WEEKEND!
    • August 19th: Parking applications go live!  See Mr. Freeman’s message about parking details below!
    • August 23rd-9AM:  New Student Orientation (Parents can attend as well!)
    • August 26th:  First day of school!
  • August 29th:  Back to School Night
  • August 30th:  Holiday; first football game @ Oakton High School

I will resume the parent coffees on the first Friday of every month at 7:30AM in September.   These are very informal, last only an hour, and they provide an opportunity for parents to chat with each other, me, and sometimes an invited guest.  At Back to School Night, we will provide a tear-off card survey that asks our parents to give feedback in three areas of needed  improvement for Fairfax High School according to our Family Engagement Survey results:  (1) Opportunities for parent involvement; (2) Opportunities and ways for parents to support their students at home; (3) School (student-specific) communication.  I hope to gather data on ways/ideas/methods that you, our parents, would like for Fairfax High School to grow in these areas.

Finally, the anonymous survey link on the bottom of my signature line provides an avenue for any member of our community to provide feedback in celebration of what is going well and in recommendation of how I, or we, might improve to be the community school we strive to be.  Those comments that are not only specific but that also provide a recommended solution or celebration have been most helpful over the past year.  I am looking forward to another year of growing in our partnership.

Your very proud principal always and in all ways,

Erin B. Lenart, Ed.D.

FHS Students Receive Director's Award at Governor's School

Two FHS students, Kyra Goldstein and Kevin Chen, were honored to receive the Director’s Award for Best Research Project for their group project “Wicked Water: The Impact of Water Quality on the Spread of Food-borne Illness in the Global Community” at the VT Governor’s School for Agriculture program this summer.

I want to thank you and the teachers for recommending Kyra and Kevin for such a wonderful program.  The experience and knowledge gained were unbelievable and they represented FHS well.
